Macaulay Culkin is one of the most famous American actors. He started winning the hearts of viewers in the 1980s, when he was still a little boy.

He starred in the first film in 1985, but it was his later role in “Home Alone” and the sequel “Home Alone” that brought him the greatest fame.

The young actor had a bright future ahead of him, but unfortunately he stopped appearing in films in the mid-1990s. As it turned out, his father, Kit Culkin, had a major influence on this turn.

What was their relationship like and what made Kevin in the movie break off contact with him?

Macaulay Culkin grew up in extreme poverty

In an interview with New York magazine in 2001, Macaulay Culkin recalled his childhood. He talked about growing up in poverty with many siblings.

Before he played the titular role of “Richie the Millionaire” , his family of seven children and two parents lived in just a one-room apartment on Second Avenue in New York.

Macaulay’s brother, Kieran, described their home in a 2018 interview with Vanity Fair : “It was just a hall and there were no separating doors, except for the bathroom, which had no lock.” He also added that some of the children went to school and some did not.

Billy Hopkins, the casting director who landed Macaulay his first role, recalled what life was like for the Culkin family: “They were so poor that I had to spend my own money to get him to and from rehearsals.

Macaulay would crawl under the stands in the theater to look for change that had fallen out of people’s pockets.” Despite everything, the child actor didn’t have the worst memories of that time.

However, he admitted that his relationship with his father had always left much to be desired. “My father was always aggressive, but it only got very, very, very bad later . “

In 2018, the actor decided to talk more about his private life. In an interview with Marek Maron for the “WTF” podcast, he admitted that he had been a victim of violence for years.

The aggressor was none other than his father, Kit Culkin. “He was abusive. Physically and mentally,” he said. In addition to his role as a father, Kit also acted as his son’s manager. This made them practically inseparable.

They traveled together to auditions and film sets. Despite this, their relationship was never intimate and their relationship was cold. “I traveled all over the country, locked in a room with a man who didn’t like me,” he told Mark Maron.

The star also revealed that he was not the only family member who suffered from domestic violence.

The rest of his siblings and their mother, Patricia Brentrup, were also said to be victims. “He was just a bad guy. “An evil, aggressive man,” Macaulay Culkin said about his father.

The source of his aggression was supposed to be… jealousy. As it turns out, Kit Culkin was once an aspiring actor. Unfortunately, he never managed to achieve success

“Everything he tried to do in life, I achieved before I was 10,” the “Kevin…” star confessed .

Macaulay Culkin deprived his parents of rights to his fortune

The conflict that arose between family members seemed to have no solution. Eventually, his parents decided to separate.

As the actor said, “After I did ‘Richie Millionaire’ in ’93 or ’94, my father and mother announced they were separated, which is one of the best things that ever happened to me.”

I managed to leave the business. I managed to say, “I hope you make all your money because you won’t get anything else from me.” However, this was not the end of his worries.

His mother filed an application for custody of her son. This did not please the father-manager. The case went on for over two years. There was more at stake than just caring for her son.

It was also about the fortune accumulated in Macaulay’s trust fund, which amounted to over 15 million dollars!

There are many stories surrounding this event. The media reported that the actor had “divorced” his parents at that point.

“The statement that I ’emancipated’ from my parents is always misinterpreted,” he said in an interview with Esquire.

“I legally removed my parents’ names from my trust and found an executor, someone to oversee my finances in case anyone wants to stick their f***ing little finger in the pie,” he explained.

After this event, Kit Culkin moved away from his former partner and seven children.

Years later, however, he would recall Macaulay’s childhood, and “Home Alone” was to be one of his most frequently watched films. His son never forgave him for the way he treated him over the years.

As he confessed, the only things he learned from his father were “what not to be and what I don’t want to be when I grow up.”
