Johnny Depp has played a number of iconic characters in his career, but none left a mark as strongly as Captain Jack Sparrow did. Such was his popularity, that the actor became the face of the Pirate of the Caribbean franchise. It spawned several sequels, and Depp appeared in all of them, cementing Jack Sparrow’s legacy.

While Sparrow might be a drunk pirate, he sure knows how to spread happiness. At least, that is what Depp does to help children who are suffering from terminal illnesses.

Johnny Depp has starred in several big franchises, such as Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. However, none have come close to the success of Pirates of the Caribbean to date.

The first installment of the series came out in 2003, complete with a star-studded lineup comprising Kiera Knightley and Orlando Bloom, among others.

However, Depp stole the show with his charisma and skills, and he reprised the role in the sequels despite the several controversies that surrounded him while he was shooting the fifth film of the franchise.

Since the films have found so much success, the pirate captain has done his part to make dreams come true.

Depp appeared on The Ellen Show a few years ago and spoke extensively about how he helped children with illnesses dressed as Jack.

He elaborated that he understood the duress the parents were in since his daughter had to spend a few weeks at the hospital, too. Therefore, he tried to make everyone laugh with his antics while staying in character.

“You know, wherever I go, I bring Captain Jack in a box… You meet all these amazing kids who are dealing with very, very adult illnesses, and you see this incredible courage in their faces, it’s the parents who are just falling apart. So I don’t break character, I just try to sort of do as much stupid stuff to make them laugh,” he told the host.

Depp truly loves the character, and his efforts to help children and their parents are truly noble. However, he does not just limit himself to hospital visits, he helps out in other ways, too.

The Edward Scissorhands actor is a distinguished actor and an advocate for ‘Sophie’s Gift’, a charity where celebrities can send voice messages to patients in a coma.

It began when the parents of a young girl reached out to him, hoping that his voice might help their daughter since Depp was her favorite actor.

Depp has his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and he commemorated it in a sweet way. He wore a bracelet as a way to honor Dustin, who passed away from cancer in 2007. “I am honored to be associated with brave little Dustin by wearing this silver and leather wrist band,” he said.

The actor supports several charities, such as the Helen & Douglas House, which provides end-of-life care to patients. Moreover, he also donates to local hospitals.

Johnny Depp is a global icon, especially for his outing in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. His charitable work is laudable.
