After 8 years, it was revealed the behind-the-scenes story behind Kanye’s Taylor mic-grabbing scandal at the 2009 VMAs.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, former MTV executive Van Toffler opened up for the first time about the behind-the-scenes story after Kanye West grabbed Taylor Swift’s mic at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.

The most memorable moment in VMAs history?

When asked about the most memorable VMAs moment, Van recalled, “When Kanye went on stage with Taylor that year, Taylor would have to go on stage to perform 5 minutes later. I ran out of the car to see if everything was okay and saw Taylor and her mother sobbing… I don’t know what to say.”

“Then I went backstage and Beyoncé was crying,” Van continued.

At the 2009 VMAs, when Taylor Swift was preparing to give a speech at the acceptance of the Best Female Artist Video (“You Belong With Me”) award, Kanye West suddenly ran on stage to snatch the mic and trophy from the 19-year-old singer (at the time of the incident):

“Hey Taylor, I’m happy for you, I’ll let you move on, but Beyoncé has one of the best videos of all time! One of the best videos of all time!”

Beyoncé then ceded the stage to Taylor Swift to share a thank you speech she was robbed of by Kanye

The camera panned to Beyoncé beneath the crowd of guests, she couldn’t hide her shock. And while Kanye’s actions were unacceptable, one has to acknowledge what the rapper said at the end of the awards ceremony, “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)” won the most important award: Video of the Year.
