Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt responded to claims about leaving his players hanging over a locker room renovation.
The NFLPA’s most recent annual team report card has the Chiefs ranked 31st, ahead of only the Commanders. Additionally, Hunt was voted the worst owner in the NFL, with the team’s outdated facilities and quality of care highlighted in the survey.
The 47 players on Kansas City’s roster who took the survey indicated how they believed their locker room would be renovated after the 2022 season and were left high and dry when it did not happen.
However, Hunt told The Athletic no such promise was made.
‘I have spoken to some of our veteran players about that, and they’ve confirmed to me that it was a miscommunication,’ Hunt said. ‘Certainly, I personally never said anything to them about a renovation of the locker room. It was a misunderstanding.’
While a complete renovation is yet to materialize, upgrades have happened under Hunt. The stools in the locker room have been replaced with chairs, while the indoor practice facility has recently been airconditioned.
The players will also have a new cafeteria, among several upgrades to the facility. Hunt declined to share details but said the upgrades are expected to be complete by early September.
‘We are making some pretty significant investments in the training facility this year, and we’ll continue to do that,’ Hunt continued. ‘We’ve outgrown that building in a number of ways.’
The Chiefs will likely enter the 2024 NFL season as title favorites after winning back-to-back championships. Kansas City will look to be the first team to three-peat in the Super Bowl era.
Hunt vowed to do better by his athletes and promised to ‘include the players in our thinking on the future of the training facility.’
