Johnny Depp put on a brave face for the second day of the International Film Festival on Friday after he learnt of his friend’s death, Shane MacGowan.

Legendary Irish rocker Shane, behind the iconic Christmas song Fairytale of New York, died ‘peacefully’ at 3am on Thursday with his wife, Victoria Mary Clarke by his side.

The singer and Johnny had a close friendship spanning over three decades after the actor previously admitted he ‘fell in love’ with the star when they first met.

Despite the sad news, Johnny still attended the screening of Jeanne Du Barry at the Red Sea International Film Festival 2023 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The star, 60, cut a dapper figure in a smart black suit while posing on the red carpet.

Johnny cut a smart figure on the outing, completing his ensemble with a crisp white shirt and thick-soled black shoes.

His long locks were gelled back in a neat ponytail and he donned white sunglasses with a blue tint.

A fan of his jewellery, he accessorised the look with his signature chunky rings and silver earrings.

The star’s impressive array of tattoos were mostly concealed, but his body art peeked out on his chest.

The film festival began on Thursday with the world premiere of the Saudi fantasy feature HJWN.

Johnny is reportedly attending the festival to present the MENA premiere of Maiwenn’s Cannes 2023 title Jeanne du Barry.

The film follows the life of Jeanne Bécu who was born as the illegitimate daughter of an impoverished seamstress in 1743.

She went on to rise through the Court of Louis XV to become his last official mistress.

Johnny’s friend Shanewas battling viral encephalitis – a life-threatening condition that leads to brain swelling – and had been in and out of Dublin’s St Vincent’s Hospital for months.

He was discharged last week ahead of his upcoming birthday on Christmas Day.

Hellraiser Shane, whose 1987 hit Fairytale of New York became a Christmas classic selling millions of copies worldwide, was famous for his hard-partying lifestyle, slurred speech, missing teeth and on-stage meltdowns during his 1980s heyday.

In recent years, the Irish icon was confined to a wheelchair and was aided by his wife and carer at home, having been plagued by ill-health linked to his years of alcohol and substance abuse.

His heartbroken wife today shared the news of the rocker’s death – which came just days after she released a touching photo of them together to mark their fifth wedding anniversary.

Johnny and Shane were firm friends, with the actor even playing guitar at Shane and Victoria’s low-key wedding in November 2018 at Copenhagen City Hall.

In 2018, Bono, Nick Cave and Sinead O’Connor, Sex Pistols bassist Glen Matlock and actor Johnny Depp joined Shane on stage for a show celebrating his 60th birthday.

Johnny also made a biopic for the stat, Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan, back in 2020, which focused on The Pogues frontman’s journey to popularity and battles with substance addiction.
