One day after releasing Arik Armstead in a stunning move, the San Francisco 49ers moved quickly to bring in another big name as a replacement.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the 49ers have signed veteran edge rusher Leonard Floyd to a two-year contract worth a max value of $24 million. Rapoport noted that Floyd is getting $12 million guaranteed in the first year of the deal:

The 31-year-old Floyd joins a stacked 49ers defense led by Nick Bosa, Fred Warner and Talanoa Hufanga. He spent last season with the Buffalo Bills, recording 10.5 sacks, one pass breakup and a forced fumble.

Floyd spent the previous three years with the Los Angeles Rams, forming a dangerous pass-rushing tandem alongside future Hall of Famer Aaron Donald. Floyd tallied at least nine sacks in each of his three years with LA, helping the Rams to a Super Bowl 56 championship in the 2021 season.

Floyd was selected ninth overall by the Chicago Bears in 2016. He had 18.5 total sacks there during his four years with the club, taking his game to a Pro Bowl-like level once he joined the Rams in 2020.

The 49ers were in need of more pass-rushing help after struggling to get after Patrick Mahomes in their Super Bowl 58 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. With Floyd, Warner and Bosa now leading the charge in the front seven, the 49ers just got that much more dangerous up front.
