Baker Mayfield made a surprise appearance at the Yankees’ spring training camp in Tampa ahead of New York’s pre-season game against the Detroit Tiger on Thursday, with the Bucs’ quarterback potentially free agency next week.

The 28-year-old, first overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft took some hacks while in the batting cage, impressing the likes of Yankees star slugger Aaron Judge, as he hit the ball out of the park on one of attempts of many that he connected with.

Mayfield is a huge baseball fan, previously admitting that coming from Austin, Texas, he roots for the Texas Rangers – the World Series winners – over the Houston Astros.

He even trolled the ‘Stros for their sign-sealing scandal in 2017, when asked about figuring out the Vikings’ signals in a regular-season game (Week 1) this past season.

‘I’m a Texas Rangers fan, not a Houston Astros fan,’ Mayfield joked at the time.

In 2018, the then-Cleveland Browns quarterback cameoed as a first base coach for the Milwaukee Brewers during a spring training game.

In the past, soon-to-be free agent signal-caller Russell Wilson and Joe Namath, who won a Super Bowl with the New York Jets in 1969, took to batting practice with the Yankees.

Amid the start of the upcoming MLB season and NFL free agency, Mayfield is yet to sign a contract extension with the Bucs’ after a stellar year that saw Tampa Bay make the divisional round of the playoffs with a 9-8 record — something that no one saw coming in Week 1.

But, according to Jenna Laine, of ESPN, both parties are ‘slowly making progress’ on a new deal, with the legal negotiation window opening up on March 11, which is when other teams can enter the frame.

The Vikings, Patriots and Falcons are all interested in signing the seven-year NFL pro this offseason.
