The Minnesota Vikings reportedly have a former No. 3 selection on their radar after losing four-time Pro Bowler Kirk Cousins in free agency.

As expected, Cousins left the Vikings to sign a four-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons worth $180 million. It was recently reported that Cousins’ family was moving to Atlanta, so it was only a matter of time until he put the pen to the paper.

According to a report from The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the Vikings will pursue veteran Sam Darnold, the No. 3 pick of the 2018 NFL Draft who spent last season as Brock Purdy’s backup for the San Francisco 49ers.

After three disappointing seasons with the Jets, Darnold was traded to the Carolina Panthers in the 2021 offseason. The change of scenery did nothing to help Darnold, who made just 17 starts over his three seasons in Carolina.

Including the lone start he made for San Fran in their meaningless Week 18 game this past season, Darnold is 21-35-0 with a 59.7 completion percentage, 12,064 passing yards and 63 touchdowns against 56 interceptions.

With the No. 11 selection in this year’s draft, Minnesota could very well target a second-tier QB prospect like Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy or Oregon’s Bo Nix. Of course, the option is there to try and trade up for a more highly-touted prospect like LSU’s Jayden Daniels or North Carolina’s Drake Maye.
