Jennifer Lopez Fails to Sell Tickets for ‘This is Me…Now’ Tour While Taylor Swift Earned a Billion Dollars from Eras Tour

Several dates for North America’s This Is Me…Now: The Tour canceled by JLo.

Renowned as a global influencer and pop icon, Jennifer Lopez has left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry. Often credited with catalyzing the Latin pop movement in the United States, she shattered barriers for Latin American artists. Her latest endeavor, the romantic drama musical film “This Is Me…Now: A Love Story,” doubles as a visual album accompanying her freshly released record of the same name. Complementing this cinematic venture is a documentary, loosely inspired by her relationship with Ben Affleck. Premiering on Amazon Prime Video, the film garnered praise from both audiences and critics alike. While anticipation was high for Lopez’s upcoming tour, dubbed “This Is Me…Now: The Tour,” recent reports indicate a setback, disappointing fans eager for a live experience of her latest work.

Jennifer Lopez cancels several dates for This Is Me…Now: The Tour amid poor demand for tickets

Pop Icon Jennifer Lopez has reportedly canceled seven concerts from her upcoming North American tour in support of This Is Me…Now. According to reports by Variety, the tour dates from August 20 to 31 scheduled in Cleveland, Nashville, Atlanta, Tampa, New Orleans, Raleigh, and Houston were canceled.

The reports suggested that even though her This Is Me…Now: The Tour is still scheduled for about 30 shows, a large chunk of her tickets remain unsold. However, it should be noted that the charts on Ticketmaster are not always accurate in showing the number of seats available or sold. The singer-actress has not yet explained why the shows were canceled but took her social media to share the updated list of shows.

Fans were disappointed and confused upon this new update about the tour in addition to a lack of communication from the artist. The album is a follow-up to her 2002 LP, This is Me…Then, which debuted at No. 38 before it dropped off the Billboard 200 album chart making it JLo’s least successful album to ever release. Fans speculated that the reason the artist decided to cancel shows of her upcoming tour was because of a lack of sales, or maybe because the album failed to reach the success that was expected.

Upon her appearance on The Tonight Show , she spoke to Jimmy Fallon about her upcoming tour and said,

“Of all the albums I’ve ever made, I feel like this one is really ready for the stage because of the Amazon Original that I did with it. It’s ready. All the choreography, everything’s ready to go.”

Instant comparisons were made with Taylor Swift’s successful Eras Tour which managed to garner the attention of the public and garnered around a billion dollars (via Pollstar). Despite, Eras Tour’s tickets being handled by various ticket agencies around the world, the tour set up a record-setting demand for the tickets. The shows were sold within a few hours making Eras Tour one of the highest-selling tours of all time.

Jennifer Lopez explains why This Is Me…Now was a self-financed project

In her conversation with Variety, the singer-actress revealed that the project which included the album, film (This Is Me…Now: A Love Story), and a documentary (The Greatest Love Story Never Told ) was self-financed and it cost her about $20 million to produce. Amazon purchased it later. In her conversation with THR, JLo explained;

“We went over budget. It was a challenging project in that way. It’s like there could have never been enough money for the project. We didn’t have endless funds from a studio. This was a very independent project that I was self-financing. So it was very challenging producorially.”

She continued,

“Everybody thought I was crazy when I said I would do it. We did have financing, and then that fell out. They pulled out at the last minute and then it was that moment where you go, ‘Ok, do we just make a video or do we go ahead and do this thing.?”

Her longtime producing partner Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas shared a range of details with Variety about the project. She claimed to be afraid that with the movie, Lopez was going to tell her journey that would look like Ben [Affleck] was the center of her world. However, the story is about what Lopez has been through for the past 20 years.

The artist lastly added that the project is going to be a defining piece of work. It is going to close a significant chapter in her life, thus helping her to move on to the next.

This Is Me…Now: A Love Story and the documentary The Greatest Love Story Never Told are streaming on Prime Video.
