“Let me go ahead and take this “L””: Dwayne Johnson Took His Razzie Win for $177M Critical Disaster Like a True People’s Champ
Despite consistently receiving negative reviews from critics, the television series “Baywatch,” which premiered in 1989 and ran until 2001, became a pop culture phenomenon. Its blend of action, drama, and iconic slow-motion beach running scenes captivated audiences and made it a staple of 90s television. Nearly two decades after its finale, the 2017 film adaptation starring Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron attempted to capitalize on this nostalgia. However, despite its commercial success, the film failed to impress critics.
As if the negative reviews weren’t enough, the film went on to become an object of ridicule when it was nominated at the 38th Golden Raspberry Awards or the Razzies. However, Dwayne Johnson was quick to turn the mockery around as he took to social media to gracefully accept the award on the film’s behalf.
On March 03, 2018, the 38th Golden Raspberry Awards presented the worst films of 2017. Seth Gordon’s Baywatch was nominated in five whole categories, including Worst Picture and Worst Actor. Out of the five categories it was nominated in, the film won in the category, ‘The Razzie Nominee So Rotten You Loved It.’
Dwayne Johnson Graciously Accepted the Razzie Award
This was a new category created and sponsored by none other than Rotten Tomatoes. After receiving the award, Dwayne Johnson took to his Instagram where he talked about winning a Razzie and he surprisingly took the whole thing in good humor. The actor started off his video by congratulating the Oscar nominees of the year and then went on to state that he too was “bringing home the gold.” The gold in question was not an Oscar but the Razzie for Baywatch, a film that made $117 million at the box office. He stated,
“I’m super pumped and very proud for my buddies who’ve been nominated tonight, pulling for you guys to bring home the gold. I’m also excited because I was just informed that I too am bringing home the gold tonight. No, not an Oscar, maybe one day, but a Razzie.”
Johnson also admitted that while things didn’t work out for the better, Baywatch was made “with the best of intentions.” He added, “I humbly and graciously accept my Razzie.”
“Let me go ahead and take this ‘L’ right on the chin for Baywatch. Win some, lose some, but hey…that’s the way love goes.”
That was one dignified way of dealing with receiving an award like Razzie. Well, he’s not The People’s Champ for no reason!
The Time When Dwayne Johnson Poked Fun at Baywatch
On the January 1 episode of WWE Raw, Johnson made an electrifying return to the squared circle. After his surprise entry, the wrestler-turned-actor confronted wrestler Jinder Mahal and, in the process, made harmless fun of his own film, Baywatch.
“If The Rock had to guess why you’re so angry it’s probably because nobody likes you and you’re not funny. As a matter of fact, if you were won of The Rock’s movies, you would probably be Baywatch.”
When Mahal retorted with “Thankfully I’ve never seen Baywatch,” Johnson was quick to state that “nobody else did either.” It looks like the actor knows that humor is always the best tool to deal with low moments of your life, which in this case, was his film being a critical disaster.
