One of his former bodyguards, Steven Stanulis, spoke in his documentary, 15 Days with Kanye, about what it was like working for the rapper, as well as why he ended up getting fired. He started by revealing that there were quite a lot of odd rules that West had in place for those who were guarding him.
“I’ve worked with people on the same level, even bigger,” Stanulis told “And I’ve never been told to stay 10 paces behind on a city street.”
One that sticks out the most was the distance they had to keep from him at all times. His security detail always be ten paces behind him. The bodyguard revealed that he has worked for many high profile celebrities including Leonardo DiCaprio himself. However, none had such a rule.
Kanye West Was Impossible To Protect
Steven Stanulis then went on to say that having such a rule completely defeated the purpose of having security. Elaborating on this, he stated that if they were in a small town, he would still be able to protect Kanye West from that distance. However, in a crowded city like Los Angeles, with fans as passionate as his, there was far too much room for danger.
He mentioned that anyone could come from any direction and no matter how skilled or fast he was, he would not be able to stop them. The reason for such a rule was so that none of his bodyguards would get photographed when the paparazzi caught him.
“Again, it’s not like we’re walking in Oklahoma,” Stanulis pointed out. “In fact, I walk on a city street anything can happen to you. North, south, east, west. Even if I was The Flash, I wouldn’t be able to go over there and help. So yeah, we wanted to demonstrate what 10 paces behind looked like just to show perspective on the distance on a city street, how crazy that would be.”
It is safe to say that the rapper thinks very highly of himself, believing his own capabilities to be enough to defend himself from an overly excited fan. The reason why Stanulis fired was because he spoke to Kim Kardashian, something that was not allowed.
