Metallica Release Pro-Shot Footage of Their Lightning-Infused 'Master of Puppets' Performance in Munich

Metallica has released pro-shot footage of their incredible “Master of Puppets” performance in Munich, complete with the incredible moment when lightning struck.Last month, the members of Metallica performed their first two shows of 2024 in Munich, Germany, as part of their M72 World Tour. While an incredible performance in and of itself, with the second night seeing the band perform its longest song, “Inamorata,” live for the first time, all attention was given to an incredible moment that was caught on video.

As the band began to play “Master of Puppets” during a downpour, lightning struck at the exact best moment it could’ve, enhancing the intro to the famous song. Now, the band has released pro-shot footage of that exact song performance, complete with the lightning strike.

During a recent interview, Metallica frontman James Hetfield opened up on his anxiety and nightmares that he has before performing, still present even after so many years on stage in front of massive audiences. He explained the contents of his dreams, saying:

“So, having the nightmares [about how] I’m the only one who cares about what we’re doing here. ‘Where is everybody?’ I show up at the gig, everyone’s goofing off, or there’s 200 people backstage and [thinking], ‘Where’s my stuff? Where’s the setlist? What songs are we doing?’

“And then, typical things like the guitar neck is made of rubber, and there’s only two strings on it. And, ‘Where’s my roadie?’, and the guitar cord won’t let me get to the microphone. Silly stuff like that. That has to happen, and I don’t freak out over it. All you do is you practice, and then you build that comes back pretty quickly.”

However, Hetfield noted that he’s learned to ignore these thoughts and continue to do what he does best:

“It’s part of the cycle; it just is. You have anxiety build up, and don’t let it get the best of ya because you have that balance of anxiety and faith. And as soon as you get up there, it’s all gonna be good.”
