The Dallas Cowboys could make Dak Prescott the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL after this season.
Dak Prescott has had one of the greatest seasons of his NFL career this season. The quarterback ranks first in the NFL in terms of QBR with a rating of 75.5. He has 26 touchdowns to his credit and has thrown for 3,234 yards this season. Led by his stellar performance, the Dallas Cowboys have been firing on all cylinders this season, the team has won 9 games and lost just 3 to date. No matter how the rest of the year pans out for America’s team, owner Jerry Jones faces a much more pressing issue in the offseason.
It is renegotiating Dak Prescott’s contract. Number 4 will be entering into the final year of his 4-year, $160 million contract which he signed in 2021. His MVP form could not have come at a better time as his performance this season has turned the tide in his favor when he goes to the negotiating table. As per Ian Rapoport, Dak Prescott could potentially sign a massive contract this offseason making him one of the highest-paid QBs in the league.
In addition to paying him well, this contract will lock in Dak Prescott for a long time ensuring the Cowboys do not need to worry about having a floor general for the next few years. The team’s VP Stephen Jones recently told Diana Russini that the team would negotiate Prescott’s extension after this season. Jones said:
Dak Prescott has shut the door on any doubts regarding his capabilities as an elite QB
Assuming a deal does not go through this offseason, the Dallas Cowboys will take a $60 million salary-cap hit in 2024 which would be far from ideal. This would result in the team having to compromise on paying other players on their roster and making any significant upgrades during free agency. Prescott is owed $5 million as a bonus on the fifth day of the new league year, an extension should be agreed upon by the QB and the team before this date as it would be a win-win situation for both.

In addition to extending their quarterback, the Dallas Cowboys will need to leave enough room on their cap to be able to accommodate extensions for CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons, both of whom will be entering the fourth year of their five-year rookie deal in 2024. Lamb has established himself as a top receiver in the NFL this season and Parsons is a defensive asset the team will not part owing to his elite skillset.
This season is Jerry Jones‘ best shot to see America’s team back in the Super Bowl in nearly 20 years. While the Cowboys have had speed bumps on the road, there is no denying the potential that this team has to go all the way to the promised land. If Dak Prescott manages to take the Cowboys to the Super Bowl, that will put him in the best position heading into contractual negotiations.
