Elon Musk reportedly dazzled Grimes during their courtship with a daring demonstration of Autopilot, driving hands-free and blindfolded to show off Tesla’s advanced feature, according to an upcoming tell-all biography by Walter Isaacson.

The billionaire invited the “mesmerizing artist” to dinner after their online hookup in 2018. While driving, he accelerated rapidly, took his hands off the wheel, covered his eyes and allowed Grimes to experience autopilot.

This gesture made a strong impression on her, as she commented: “This guy is fucking crazy,” referring to Musk’s bold behavior. The biographer, who spent more than a year following Musk, revealed this anecdote from the upcoming book, which sheds light on their whirlwind relationship.

The courtship begins

Their romance story also began with Musk quizzing Grimes about “The Lord of the Rings” and her gifting him a box of animal bones. Their love story, full of eccentricities, unfolded over three tumultuous years.

Musk and Grimes, who met a year earlier when Musk was with then-girlfriend Amber Heard, reconnected following his split from Heard in 2018. Their connection was initially sparked by their shared interest in Roko’s Basilisk, a thought experiment involving artificial intelligence.

Beyond the autopilot trick, their first dates included a visit to Musk’s Tesla factory and a tour of the plant. Despite the unconventional nature of their relationship, the two had two children together before splitting in September 2022.
