Musk has spent the past seven years building a small real estate empire in the celebrity enclave of Bel Air, buying six properties within walking distance of each other.
The homes, which range in value from $3.2 million to $30 million, are located on two adjacent streets, at one point sparking rumors that Musk planned to build a connecting tunnel system beneath them.
But now, Musk is taking steps to dismantle the real estate sector.
The eccentric businessman, who is estimated by Forbes to be worth more than $38 billion, indicated he planned to put the homes up for sale in a bizarre Twitter post on Friday, writing: “I am selling almost all of my physical possessions. I will not own any houses.”
In the same speech, Musk declared that Tesla’s stock price was “too high,” causing the company’s shares to fall nearly 11 percent and erasing about $13 million from its market value, including nearly $3 million from the CEO’s stake.
On Monday, it was revealed that Musk had put two of the Bel Air homes up for sale for a combined $39.5 million.

Musk listed this home at 10924 Chalon Road for sale for $30 million on Monday, two days after his Twitter rant.
This home at 10930 Chalon Road, previously owned by Gene Wilder, is now also for sale for $9.5 million.
Musk purchased the house pictured above, at 10947 Chalon Road, in July 2015 for $20 million. It is now estimated to be worth $10.7 million.
The first home for sale is Musk’s estate in lower Bel Air, which overlooks the Bel Air Country Club.
The home, which Musk purchased in 2012 for $17 million, is listed on Zillow for $30 million.
The 16,251-square-foot mansion features six bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, a two-story library, a swimming pool and a tennis court.
It also has a gym, swimming pool, wine cellar, fruit orchard and garage for five cars.
The second home was listed for $9.5 million and was formerly owned by the late Willy Wonka actor Gene Wilder, who passed away in 2016.
It features five bedrooms, 4.5 bathrooms, an oval pool and a private guest house.
In November 2013, Musk purchased the three-quarter-acre home in Bel Air for $6.75 million. Musk has since turned the property into a private school.
In one of his tweets on Friday, Musk said he would sell the house under certain conditions.
“The sale has only one condition: I am the owner of Gene Wilder’s former home. It cannot be demolished and its essence cannot be lost,” Musk said.
