Britney Spears’ beloved film Crossroads is considered a quintessential noughties gem, but I couldn’t be more shocked by what played out on screen throughout the 2002 flick

Crossroads is Britney Spears’ iconic Hollywood flick from 2002, which was recently added to Netflix.

Featuring an all-star cast including Zoe Saldana, Taryn Manning, Kim Cattrall and Justin Long, Crossroads is set up to be the ultimate girly flick – except I was left with my jaw on the floor after watching what went down.

The film starts out with that classic coming-of-age Hollywood trope – leaving everything in your hometown behind to chase your dreams on the other side of the country. Britney’s character Lucy leaves her father worried sick throughout the entire film and even torments the poor sod by ringing, waiting until he picks up the phone and then hanging up.

Lucy leaves home with her two childhood friends and barely bothers to call her dad, who was clearly losing his mind over her disappearance. Another thing – this road trip spanned the entire way across the US from Georgia to Los Angeles, which according to Google Maps would take a whopping 34 hours of non stop driving.

Of course they don’t complete this journey all in one go – instead, the three young and vulnerable teenage girls decide to make a number of overnight pit stops including at a dodgy motel, and they even spend one night camping in the wilderness on the side of the road.

At this point in the film my blood pressure was beginning to rise as I thought we’d have a The Hills Have Eyes situation on our hands. I managed to restrain the urge to reach through the screen and shake some sense into all three of them, but I haven’t even told you the worst part yet.

Did I forget to mention that this whole time, their chauffeur is a former high school student that all three of them believe to be a convicted murderer? Yes, that’s right, all three girls are under the impression that this Ben fella actually killed someone and they all unanimously decide to carry on across America with a blood-thirsty criminal at the wheel (they find out waaay later that this was just a rumour, but that is so not the point).

The film had the generic message of friendship, love and not forgetting where you come from with an overall satisfying ending, but as the trio buried their “wish box” on Los Angeles beach, I couldn’t help but wonder: “When the hell is Lucy going to ring her dad back?”
