Miley Cyrus lost millions from her Bangerz tour, so this is the reason
Miley Cyrus says she paid for virtually all of the outlandish props used in her iconic Bangerz tour, as she felt it was what “exactly what I and the fans deserved.”
In a segment on her TikTok promoting her single “Used to Be Young,” Cyrus reflected on the 2014 tour, claiming that she purchased many of the iconic props associated with the tour, including a giant model of her own tongue, to support her and creative director Diane Martel’s vision for the show.
“The Bangerz tour was an investment in myself,” Cyrus says in the video. “A lot of these ideas were kind of so outlandish that no one really wanted to support me in making these pieces. So I had big puppets, oversized beds. I came out of my own face on my tongue.”
Cyrus says that she and Martel wanted to end the show by making a reference to The Truman Show, the 1999 comedy-drama starring Jim Carrey, so she decided to fly out on a giant hot dog prop and leave through a giant exit sign, as Carrey does in the film. “I felt like The Truman Show was a reflection of my life,” she explains.

Though the tour grossed a little more than $62 million, Cyrus says she “didn’t make a dime” off the proceeds because she wanted the show to be “excellent,” paying for the set pieces despite her team’s protests that she wouldn’t make any money off it. “I said, ‘there is no one I would rather invest in myself,’” she recalls in the video.
In the series, Cyrus reflects on her career as a musician, most recently commenting on the backstory behind her 2007 hit, “See You Again,” which made Billboard‘s top 10 after its release. “My record label at the time didn’t think the song was a hit, so there was never a music video made for it,” she said in the clip. “[And] my fans decided otherwise.”
