Ahead of the 2024 Grammys, thousands of Taylor Swift superfans were chatting on social media, getting ready for a major announcement from the singer. The rumor before the ceremony began was that the singer was going to use the annual ceremony to reveal something very special. While their predictions ended up being true, the superstar didn’t state what anyone was expecting, and though it was no less exciting, her rollout plan does pose some questions about what many assumed would be her next project.
Countless Swifties predicted that their favorite singer was getting ready to announce the release of Reputation (Taylor’s Version). Fans guessed that the title would be her next project to arrive, and the fifth in her re-recording series. Instead of sharing with the world when that CD would be available, she did something very few people expected.
When she was named the winner of the Best Pop Vocal Album award at the Grammys earlier this year, Swift stepped up to the microphone for her acceptance speech. She then revealed not that Reputation (Taylor’s Version) was on the way, but rather that a completely new collection was finished and was coming soon.
Swift’s eleventh album of original material, The Tortured Poets Department, is slated to arrive in mid-April. There had been no indications from the singer herself or anyone she works with that a new full-length was in the works prior to her speech. That made her announcement that much more of a shock, and incredibly thrilling for her massive global fan base.
While Swifties are surely going to devour The Tortured Poets Department when it drops later this month–potentially with a single coming before the full-length–what does that mean for the title that so many were anticipating? Where is Reputation (Taylor’s Version), and when will the public get to make that project a smash (for the second time)?
Despite some cryptic clues that the album, which was all about the darker side of fame, Swift’s life, and included all things green–which she had been seen wearing in the past few weeks–was in the works, there’s no word yet on when Reputation (Taylor’s Version) may drop. Swift is not one to give much away until she’s completely ready, as she loves to play into the guessing games and the predictions that Swifties make online. With a new album scheduled for later this month, the chances of the re-recording arriving anytime soon are slim.
Swift will almost surely want to spend 2024 promoting The Tortured Poets Department. It’s possible that she’ll drop her next re-recording–almost surely Reputation (Taylor’s Version)—before 2025 rolls around, though that seems like a bit of a stretch. Anything is possible with the incredibly prolific singer, but for the moment, that title may have to be put on the back burner in favor of newer, even more exciting music.
