Not every time you see two sports legends coming together. But Tiger Woods partnered with three-time American League MVP Mike Trout to design a golf course in Vineland, near Millville, where Trout grew up. For Woods, Trout National—The Reserve will be his maiden step in New Jersey, having previously designed courses in Utah, Missouri, Texas, and even Mexico.

Trout roped in local developer John Ruga for this project. Whereas, TGR Foundation, Woods’s philanthropic venture, released the initial par 72, 18-hole layout last September. Both parties submitted the final plan on January 19 before the five-member board. The latest decision after the board meeting will put a smile on Woods’s face despite his hapless performance in the Seminole Pro-member on Monday.

Promising news for Woods came from New Jersey

The nine-phase development plan was approved by the board. The construction is slated to begin this year, with hopes of opening it to members by 2025. “The secondary effect of this on Vineland businesses could bring hundreds of thousands of dollars into the city and beyond for a single event,” NJ Advanced Media quoted Mayor Anthony Fanucci as saying. Golf courses have around $100 billion in economic impact in the US, the mayor further added.

11 holes will be built in the first stage, with the remaining in the second phase. In addition to the course, a short practice range, putting course, performance training center, clubhouse, and private lodges will be built in the later stages. Located off Hance Bridge Road, the new championship course will be built on a former silica and sand mine. TGR will look to incorporate that natural element into the course through strategically placed sand bunkers.

Woods and Trout were spotted doing a recce of the place during the winter. The board approved the initial proposal last July. This will be Woods’s latest achievement on the growing list of courses.

Tiger Woods has a rich portfolio as a golf course architect

Woods’s initial success came with the opening of El Cardonal in Mexico. The 18-hole course at Diamante was the venue of the PGA Tour’s World Wide Technology Championship last year. Bluejack National at Houston was another course designed by Woods that showed his keen eye for classic golf course design. Alongside the larger courses, the veteran golfer also designed the Oasis short course at Diamante and the ‘Playgrounds’ short course at Bluejack National.

Only last year, the Hall of Famer announced another new golf course in Utah. The Marcella Club is a joint venture of TGR, Marcella Mountain, and Marcella at Jordanelle Ridge communities in the Park City area. However, the 36-hole layout will be a private course. The New Jersey project will be the latest addition to his portfolio of a dozen golf courses.
