“We weren’t good enough…” Steve Kerr gets painfully honest as Warriors lose to New York Knicks

Golden State Warriors’ Coach Steve Kerr

Coach Steve Kerr and his Golden State Warriors team hosted the New York Knicks at their home turf, the Chase Center, in what was a must-win game for the Warriors. The visitors pulled off an upset as they emerged victorious 119-112 to extend their winning run to four consecutive games.

As a result of the loss, the Warriors went down one place to 10th and were four games behind for a chance to make it out of the play-in places. The loss was painful as the Dubs lost to a Knicks team, missing the services of OG Anunoby and Julius Randle to an elbow and a shoulder injury, respectively.

During the post-game press conference, Steve Kerr, the Warriors’ head coach, responded to a question about what he made from the game after the loss, saying candidly that his team wasn’t good enough against a team as good as the New York Knicks. Coach Kerr said:

I don't think it's a lack of effort. I think we weren't good enough. It's that simple. We just did not play well enough. It's disappointing because we have these three home games here this week, and we wanted to get off on the right track, but that's a really good team, and they just outplayed us. Simple as that.

Furthermore, the Golden State Warriors have failed to make their home court a fortress this season. This season, so far, they have a record of 17-18 on their turf compared to last season, where they had a home record of 33-8. A point emphasized by Coach Kerr where he realized the importance of controlling home territory and their failure to do that has been a contributory factor for their inability to climb up the hotly contested Western Conference standings.

The Warriors shoot themselves in the foot against the New York Knicks

The Warriors’ surprising loss to the Knicks last night, combined with the Purple and Gold’s scintillating win over the Atlanta Hawks, sent them back to 10th, the last Play-in spot in the Western Conference standings. Furthermore, they are three games in front of the Houston Rockets, who are giving the Warriors above them a run for their money and have racked up five consecutive wins.

The pressure is now on the Warriors as, on paper, the game against the Knicks was a walk in the park for them—an example of not to underrate any team in this league.

The Warriors, however, know what it takes to navigate pressure, as they have the team and mentality to help them make a deep run. The Dubs’ next four games must be treated as a must-win: two home games against the Memphis Grizzlies and the Indiana Pacers and two challenging away games against the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Miami Heat.
