Prince William promises to ‘look after’ Kate on his first royal engagement since Princess shared cancer diagnosis
Wills shrugged off the update on his brother’s ‘drug use’ conspiracy
PRINCE William promised to “look after” the Princess of Wales as he made his first public appearance since her cancer announcement a month ago.
William, 41, gave a helping hand loading food and cooking in the kitchen at food distribution charity Surplus to Supper, in Sunbury-on-Thames, Surrey.

Volunteer Rachel Candappa, 71, handed two get-well-soon cards to the Prince addressed to the King and Kate.
William, who looked visibly moved, said: “Thank you. You are very kind.”
When Rachel told Wills to look after Kate he placed his left hand on her shoulder and promised “I will”.
Speaking afterwards Rachel, of Sunbury-on-Thames, said: “I said take care of her and he said ‘I will’.
“I was at home at 8.30 last night and I thought I had to do something. This is a chance to give a card directly to the palace officials.
“I didn’t think I’d be able to give the cards to William.
“I said ‘can I shake your hand’. I loved it. He was very down to earth. I’m never washing my hand again.
“He pointed at the food and said ‘that’s spaghetti hoops’ and I asked ‘how do you know about spaghetti hoops’ and he said ‘I’ve got children’.”
William arrived at Surplus to Supper, which is based at Sunbury Cricket club, and told his hosts “Louis loves” cricket as he was introduced.
Inside, the prince witnessed volunteers sorting out goodies including soaps, hand wash and make-up and was surprised to see a rose collagen mist spray.
William and Kate donated a crate of pasta, potatoes, tinned soup, taken from the Adelaide Cottage kitchen.
The royals donated food is set to be delivered to the Hampton Hub which has a food bank.
He told host Claire Hopkins, operations director of Surplus to Supper, he was surprised “how much we throw away” as he witnessed all goodies being reused.
The prince also helped out in the kitchen with chef Mario Colfait who was making bolognese, sausage casserole and chili con carne.
He pulled on an apron and called out: “It smells good in here Mario.”
Wills was then handed a massive knife and asked to slice celery for the pot.

The kitchen cooks “culturally appropriate” food delivered to families in the area.
Wills joked he was worried about slicing his fingers off.
He said: “It’s the biggest knife – hope for the best.”
And added: “I don’t want to mess up everyone’s lunch. I hope I haven’t ruined your lunch, but you can blame me.”
Watching volunteers pack up food for the needy, he said: “It’s amazing the amount of food and variety.”
Speaking about his cooking skills, he told volunteers: “Mario took one look at my chopping and said ‘move on’.
“I’m never normally trusted with a knife. I’d cut my finger off.
“You all do a fantastic job and all this food is making my tummy rumble.”
The charity delivers surplus food to homes in a five mile radius including frozen meals to care homes.
The prince had privately given the charity a box of unused food pilfered from the kitchen cupboards at Adelaide Cottage.
He mingled with volunteers who described how they sort through food and non-perishable items before they are packed up and sent off in the back of a delivery van.

Wills even loaded food on the back of a van and jumped in the passenger seat to help out with a local delivery.
He joined volunteers on the three-mile journey to the Hanworth Centre Hub in Feltham, west London.
On arrival, just after 1pm, the Prince, wearing a high vis orange charity vest, jumped out and helped unload the van.
Picking up a crate full of bananas, he asked: “Anywhere in particular?” before handing it to a volunteer.
I said take care of her and he said ‘I will’.
When Ms Hopkins began trying to introduce him to her volunteers, he said: “Hang on, I can’t just do one,” and went back for another crate.
The Prince carried in a second crate before heading inside to be introduced to several volunteers and members of staff who work at the hub, which brings together various youth organisations under one roof.
He asked Siobhan Donoghue, CEO of Perfectly Imperfect, how she had come into contact with the Surplus to Supper team and how their work was coordinated.
The Prince asked about the age range of the young people who visit the centre and how the staff worked with the local community.
“Are you all volunteers?” he asked.
“What issues are you seeing people presenting with at the moment? What are the worrying trends?” he asked.
Darren Beecroft, CEO of Rise and Thrive, one of the youth charities based at the hub, told William that one of the main challenges was changing youngsters’ opinions about the police.
“It’s breaking down the stigma about how people think and feel,” he said. “That’s one of our big hurdles, how do you break down barriers.”
The Prince said: “It’s crucial isn’t it? It’s breaking down barriers on both sides.”
He told the volunteers that he could imagine it felt “quite isolating at times… with all the things going on in the world and all the things you’ve got to worry about”.
The Prince then sat down for a chat with three young people who use the centre – Ella Vianni, Liv Cobb and Maisie Allen – asking which activities they enjoyed.
“How are you all today?” William said as he sat down. “Bit nervous?”
One of the girls told him she helped with the cooking and enjoyed making cakes.
“You’re a baker then?” he replied. “That’s a good one to be. Everyone wants a baker as a friend – it’s pretty cool.”
He asked one of the others about her art and whether she found it relaxing.
The Prince had a quick chat with Ms Hopkins about her work with Surplus to Supper outside before leaving.
She said afterwards: “He said we were doing a great job and he could see the difference that this model makes.”
The heir’s engagement came just hours after it was revealed Prince Harry was thought to have cut ties with the UK.
The prince shrugged off the fact his brother had now listed his California mansion as his primary residence.
HARRY’S VISA ROW
The key facts:
Harry claimed in his memoir Spare he has taken coke, weed and magic mushrooms.
A conservative think tank called the Heritage Foundation say the drug use claims pull Harry’s immigration status into question.
They took the US government to court demanding the Duke’s visa application is made public, to see if he lied about his past drug use.
If he did lie, Harry could be in breach of US federal law.
Government lawyers argue say releasing such documents would breach Harry’s privacy and security.
Harry, 39, put “New Country/State Usually Resident” as America on Companies House filings in June last year.
He previously listed the UK as his primary home.
The change signals a clear break with Britain, after he and wife Meghan Markle quit the Royal Family in 2020.
A Royal Expert last night claimed that Harry had backdated his residency to make a point to his brother and father.
But Wills looked unphased today as he carried on his duties with pride.
The prince is today visiting organisations working with communities and the environment – two topics very close to his and Princess Kate’s hearts.
He’s first meeting with Surplus to Supper, a surplus food redistribution charity, before heading to a youth centre.
While at the Sunbury Cricket Club, in Surrey, Wills was seen chatting to people outside.
He then headed inside, donned an apron and was seen slicing up celery.
Wills, 41, was last seen in public at an event tackling homelessness in Sheffield on March 19 — three days before Kate’s shock revelation.
I’m never normally trusted with a knife I’d cut my finger off.
Prince William
It was there where he made a touching remark about wanting his wife by his side.
It was announced on Tuesday that the heir would visit Surrey and London this week.
Wills was last spotted at Aston Villa last week – with Prince George at his side.
The father and son duo were seen celebrating Unai Emery’s side after Ollie Watkins scored the first goal in their clash against Lille at Villa Park on Thursday.
Prince George stepped out in his claret and blue Aston Villa scarf and beamed as he stood beside his proud dad.
The 10-year-old has followed in Prince William’s footsteps and is a keen Aston Villa fan.

The pair chatted and laughed with each other as they watched the match intensely from their seats.
Chief sports writer of the Sunday People, Neil Moxley, asked William: “Your Highness – after the Mostar game we saw you and you said 1-0 was a good result in Europe. How was this?”
“Two-nil would have been better,” joked the Prince.
“Is George now part of the pride?” asked Mr Moxley.
“Oh yes, he’s loving it,” replied the smiling father.
I don’t want to mess up everyone’s lunch. I hope I haven’t ruined your lunch, but you can blame me.
Prince William
Prior to that Wills was last seen in Sheffield on March 19 – beaming as he met locals working in and impacted by homelessness.
The Prince of Wales, 41, was greeted warmly with cheers from well-wishers as he arrived – taking selfies and waving to fans.
He was snapped beaming as he spoke with parents, carers and young adults from local families as a part of the Homewards programme – which aims to battle homelessness throughout the UK.
The Prince of Wales later joined Homewards Sheffield Local Coalition meeting at the Millennium Gallery – to discuss ways to end homelessness.
They touched on the topic of childhood – to which Wills instantly smiled, before referring to the success of his wife’s projects.
The heir said his wife should have been there at his side today, after her years committed to Early Years projects.
Holding his palms out and grinning, Wills said: “We’re venturing into my wife’s territory. She needs to be sat here to hear this.”
Three days later Princess Kate gave an update on her health.
She gave a heartfelt and emotional video statement revealing she was undergoing preventative chemotherapy.
In her message, she described how William was a “great source of comfort and reassurance” and described how “as a family, we now need some time, space and privacy” while she completed her treatment.
Prince William and Kate Middleton’s affectionate royal nicknames
By BECKY PEMBERTON
PRINCE William and Kate Middleton may be the picture of elegance in public, but they do have some very sweet and affectionate nicknames for each other.
The royal couple – who share Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis – are celebrating their 13th wedding anniversary this month, after meeting at university.
Royal editor Ingrid Seward told The Sun’s Royal Show that the Prince and Princess of Wales have some rather informal pet names for one another.
Speaking to The Sun’s Royal Correspondent Matt Wilkinson, she said: “Prince William was Big Willie, I think.
“Kate was Babykins, But people change their nicknames every time.”
Ingrid added that King Charles often refers to Queen Camilla as “darling” or “beloved.”
She added: “It’s really nice when he says ‘my beloved wife’, as he used to say with the Queen, ‘my beloved mother.’”
Prince Harry and Meghan sent Kate wishes of “health and healing” after her brave message was broadcast to the world.
But an insider claimed the couple “had no idea” Kate, 42, was undergoing treatment for cancer until she shared the video message.
The pair said: “We wish health and healing for Kate and the family and hope they are able to do so privately and in peace.”
Harry and Meghan live in a $14 million mansion in Montecito with kids Archie, four, and Lilibet, two.
The 18,000-square-foot pile boasts nine bedrooms and 16 bathrooms as well as a sauna, gym, games room and arcade.
A library, office — which Meghan says she shares with Harry — wine cellar and a five-car garage also feature.
Sprawling gardens showcase a large pool, tennis court, chicken coop and rose gardens.
And there’s even a roomy terrace with a wood-fired stove and barbecue.
‘It’s not proof’
It comes as Harry is fighting to stop the release of immigration papers after concerns were raised over his visa application.
The case was brought by a think tank after Harry claimed in his memoir Spare he took coke, weed and magic mushrooms.
The Heritage Foundation argue that releasing the documents will prove if Harry lied about his past drug use on his visa application.
They say that if the Duke did lie, he could be in breach of US federal law and should lose his immigration status.
Lawyers for the US government have argued Harry’s drug claims in the explosive book “is not proof” he actually took them.
The Department for Homeland Security, which oversees immigration, say making Harry’s documents public would breach his privacy.
In its legal filing, DHS said the records at issue are “particularly sensitive” because they would “reveal Harry’s (immigration) status in the United States”.
