One Piece Film: RED hints Luffy’s ultimate dream is to “make a new era.”
Luffy’s goal may involve bringing structural change or challenging the World Government.
Freedom and status as Pirate King are steps towards Luffy’s true, serious objective.

Most fans of One Piece believe that Luffy’s dream is becoming the Pirate King, but that is not the truth, and One Piece Film: RED confirms it. While Luffy’s immediate goal is to find the One Piece treasure and be recognized as the new Pirate King, the manga has recently revealed that this is only a means to something else that remains secret, but One Piece Film: RED just dropped a huge hint on what Luffy’s real dream is.

In One Piece Film: RED, Luffy clashes with his childhood friend Uta, the adoptive daughter of Shanks, who grew to hate pirates due to a terrible incident in her past. Uta does not understand why Luffy wants to be a pirate like Shanks rather than living happily and peacefully with her, and asks him what is so important about his dream that he can’t give it up. Luffy’s answer, even if brief, is that he wants “to make a new era, which is similar to what Uta wants, in a twisted way, with the power of her Devil Fruit.

While this may not seem a lot to go on, it’s actually a really important clue. Because Luffy’s secret dream caused hilarity in almost everyone who heard about it, it could be something absolutely outrageous like “sharing a meal with everyone in the world”. Instead, wanting “to make a new era” means that Luffy’s goal is about bringing actual, solid change to the world and its structures.

Since the very first chapter of One Piece, Luffy declared his intention to become the Pirate King, a title that belonged to only one man, Gol D. Roger. To achieve that, Luffy has to explore the Grand Line, collect the Road Poneglyphs, and find the final, hidden island of Laugh Tale, where Roger’s legendary treasure, the One Piece, lies.

However, in chapter #1060 of One Piece, Eiichiro Oda shocked his readers, revealing that being the Pirate King is not Luffy’s real dream. In the chapter, Luffy revealed his true dream to the Straw Hats, eliciting mixed reactions from each crew member. His real dream isn’t disclosed to fans and remains a secret he has shared only with Shanks, Sabo, Ace, and his fellow Straw Hats, but it’s something so outrageous to be both hilarious and unbelievable.

Luffy is not interested in the prestige or the power that come with the title of Pirate King, but in the freedom it entails: ” the one who is the most free is the Pirate King “.

Perhaps Luffy wants to abolish the tyrannical World Government so that everyone can feel as free as he is. Political change does not seem something that the Straw Hat captain thinks about, but Luffy has already proved to be much smarter than people give him credit for, so this option can’t be excluded.

Freedom, and the Pirate King title, then, are not Luffy’s final goal but rather something that he needs to acquire to achieve his actual objective. Whatever Luffy‘s real dream will turn out to be, One Piece Film: RED hinted that it will not be something ridiculous or inconsistent but a real, huge change of status quo that will usher in a new era for the world.
