Al Nassr captain Cristiano Ronaldo was shown a straight red card for violent conduct during his team’s 2-1 defeat by Al-Hilal in the semi-finals of the Saudi Super Cup on Monday.

Ronaldo was sent off in the 86th minute after elbowing Al-Hilal defender Ali Al-Bulayhi, who fell dramatically to the ground, during a brief scuffle near the touchline.

After being dismissed, Ronaldo raised his fist and momentarily looked as though he was going to strike referee Mohammed Al Hoaish.

However, the 39-year-old then retreated and left the pitch amid a chorus of booing and jeering.

Ronaldo had vented his anger towards the referee earlier in the game after Al Nassr had a goal disallowed.

Otavio thought that he had given Al Nassr the lead in first-half added time when he got on the end of a deep cross from Sadio Mane.

But the goal was ruled out because Ronaldo, who had tried and failed to reach the ball before it fell to Otavio, had been in an offside position.

Ronaldo was shown a yellow card for dissent after a VAR review had confirmed that the goal would not stand.

Al-Hilal then went 1-0 up in the 61st minute thanks to a goal from Salem Aldawsari shortly after Ronaldo had lost possession.

Former Barcelona winger Malcom got Al-Hilal’s second goal 11 minutes later.

Mane scored a consolation goal for Al Nassr after Ronaldo had been dismissed but it was too little too late.

Al-Hilal – who are 12 points above Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League – will now face Al-Ittihad in the Super Cup final on Thursday.
