A look at the band’s top 25 live picks during their career.

This Is How Metallica's Most-Played Songs Live Have Changed Throughout The Years

Metallica are not only the biggest and most popular metal band of all time, but they’ve also earned their reputation as a consistently great live act, honing their performances through unstoppable touring runs since their early days. With over 2000 gigs played throughout their career, the band has been praised for how often they change things up, either by trying out new concepts live as the recent “No Repeats Weekend”, or by bringing some unexpected gems and deep cuts to the setlist on a regular basis.

However, for a band with so many mainstream hits and fan-favorite tunes, which are the songs that have been played most often during Metallica’s career? And how did they change in over 40 years as a touring band?

YouTuber Poutrel tried to answer this question with a look at the legendary metal group’s statistics from their known setlists (126 concerts were unaccounted for), going all the way back to 1982, when, unsurprisingly, “No Life ’til Leather” and “Kill ’em All” tunes were supreme during the sets.

Interestingly, “Seek and Destroy” took the lead in 1985 and only lost its top-spot more than a decade later, when “Creeping Death” became Metallica’s most-played song live.

The “Ride the Lightning” tune remained on top until 2009, when “Master of Puppets” became the most-played song, remaining at the top of the list until today.

Somewhat unexpectedly, mega-hits like “Enter Sandman” and “Nothing Else Matters” aren’t even in the top 5, which might be due to their later release in 1991’s “Black Album”.
