Since she is one of the best-selling solo artists in music history, Mariah Carey has made enough money to amass a huge fortune. As impressive as that is, Carey’s influence on pop culture is truly fascinating.

Considering everything that Carey has accomplished, there are a slew of interesting questions that she could be asked.

Despite that, Howard Stern once spent his interview time with Carey objectifying her and making the singer obviously uncomfortable.

How Did Howard Stern Make Mariah Carey Uncomfortable?

By the year 1998, Mariah Carey had already cemented her legacy as an all-time great pop star.

Having already released six studio albums by that time, Carey’s music had provided the soundtrack to millions of people’s lives.

Carey had also won a series of major awards and sold millions of albums which allowed her to accumulate an incredible fortune.

Since Carey had done things most singers can only dream of, she had experienced things people can learn from.

Looking back on how many number-one hits Carey had released as of 1998, she clearly deserved respect.

Unless Carey had done things wrong, she also deserved to be treated with basic human dignity.

When Carey appeared on The Howard Stern Show in 1998, however, she was treated in a pretty shocking way.

In fact, it would be very difficult for anyone to argue that Howard Stern treated Carey with respect, including the legendary radio host.

Sandra Bernhard and Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey has feuded with several celebrities while Sandra Bernhard has said some unfiltered opinions on pop icons.

Before Carey entered the room where Stern’s show was being recorded, the radio host was deservedly singing her accolades.

“We’re about a second away from Mariah Carey sitting out. She’s a pretty big star man.”

However, pretty much from the moment that Carey appeared before him, Stern unashamedly sexualized the singer.

Before Carey could even speak, Stern’s first comments about her looks could be heard. “What a dress.”

From there, Stern and Carey seemed to start a nice conversation but that only lasted for a matter of seconds.

Once Carey confronted Stern for disrespectfully talking about her in the past, everything went off the rails.

Right off the bat, Stern claimed that Carey would prefer to sing onstage in front of the world with nothing on.

Seemingly in an attempt to change the subject, Carey went on to say something warm to Stern. “I feel like I’m with family. I watch you guys all the time.”

Carey then seemed to have a moment of realization as she began questioning what parts of her would be seen by Stern’s cameras.

Instead of trying to assuage Carey’s worries, Stern played right into them. “Right up your dress.”

Yet again, Carey tried to get things back on track by talking about who designed the dress she was wearing. In response, Stern asked Carey why she didn’t flash him onstage.

David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc

David Schwimmer remained calm during his interview on The Howard Stern Show, despite inappropriate comments about Matt LeBlanc and Matthew Perry.

In theory, Stern’s interview with Carey had nowhere to go put up at this point.

Unfortunately for Carey, however, things only got worse. After all, Stern began objectifying Carey as he talked about her body and how attractive he found her.

Stern’s sidekick Robin Quivers also got in on the act as she openly judged what Carey had worn to events.

Throughout this process, Carey repeatedly said things that made it completely obvious that she was uncomfortable.

Carey even once told Stern that she was innocent.

“I told you, I’m a very innocent girl. You can’t do that kind of stuff to me.”

Instead of changing his behavior in any way, Stern disputed that Carey was innocent.

Stern then asked Carey more than once if she was wearing undergarments under her dress.

In response to that line of questioning, Carey directly asked Stern to stop.

“Howard, don’t say that. You’re making a mockery of me.”

Still not through, Stern tried to claim that Stern was too sensitive about his remarks. “I hope you take this the right way. You take things the wrong way.”

Stern followed that up by stating his opinion that Carey dressed like an adult dancer, which prompted her to say she was leaving.

Quivers attempted to step in at that moment by repeatedly asking Stern to change the subject.

Seconds later, however, Quivers and Stern were both judging Carey for saying she wasn’t going to party that night.

In response, Carey called Quivers out. “Robin, you know what, you chime in. You just act like the innocent one and egg him on.”

Throughout the rest of Stern’s and Carey’s roughly fifteen-minute interview, things got uncomfortable several times.

For example, Stern tried to link Carey with several male stars, and he went on about what he wanted to do with the singer.

Did Howard Stern Apologize To Mariah Carey?

When Howard Stern interviewed Mariah Carey in 1998, he was known as a shock jock.

As time has progressed, however, Stern’s attitude has changed dramatically, as he is now far more respectful of his guests.

These days, Stern calls other people out for behaving the way he did with Carey.

Howard Stern Slammed Bill Maher After He Reignited Their Feud By Bashing His Wife

Howard Stern claimed people in Hollywood not so secretly think Bill Maher is a real piece of work.

Given Stern’s change in attitude, it is fascinating to consider how he would view his Carey interview now.

The perfect way to answer that question is by looking at whether Stern ever apologized for the way he treated Carey.

In 2012, Mariah Carey’s ex-husband Nick Cannon was interviewed as a part of the America’s Got Talent Wrap-Up Show.

As a part of that interview, Cannon revealed that Carey was upset when she learned Cannon and Stern were going to work together.

Cannon also described the moment when Stern apologized to Carey.

“They sat down. You know, me and Beth kind of like, step back.

And I watched, you know, them have their little conversation about the past. And he apologized, he understood. It was a nice moment.”

Also in 2012, Carey and Cannon were interviewed together at a charity event. During the interview, Carey was asked about Stern potentially coming to their home.

As Cannon talked about his friendship with Stern, Carey didn’t say anything at first.

While the look on Carey’s face in response to the discussion about Stern could be deeply analyzed, she went on to say something positive.

In response to Cannon revealing that Stern sent them gifts for their babies at that time, Carey remarked, “That was very nice.”
