Domantas Sabonis is leading the Sacramento Kings in the playoffs race just like a crowned head. The lethal touch of the Lithuanian is still potent late in the season to strike down the Philadelphia 76ers.
In the process, Domantas Sabonis has broken a record cherished by Miami Heat fans for years. Apart from his latest double-double performance against the 76ers, the NBA MVP contender has joined the ranks of the game’s elites with a triple-double stat line.
Domantas Sabonis sets new NBA double-double record
Domantas Sabonis has marked his footprints in NBA history by setting a new record for consecutive double-doubles, a feat that will be hard for his contemporaries to break anytime soon.
The Kings guard scored 11 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, and dished out 10 assists against the Philadelphia 76ers, recording his 54th double-double in a row, surpassing the previous record of 53 held by Kevin Love. Sabonis received a round of applause and a standing ovation from the courtside audience following his accomplishment.
The 27-year-old center has an opportunity to break NBA legend Hakeem Olajuwon’s record of 72 double-doubles in a single season. The Lithuanian baller has 67 double-doubles to his name this season, 9 more than his fellow MVP contender Nikola Jokic. The Kings number 10 needs to get 6 more double-doubles in the remaining 11 games to surpass Olajuwon’s record.
Sabonis has broken the glass ceiling with his extraordinary consistency on the hardwood and racked up massive numbers to his name, setting more than just one record this season.
Sabonis performance this NBA season in numbers
With his record-breaking numbers so far this season, Sabonis has helped his franchise secure the sixth spot in the Western Conference standings with a 42-29 record.
The Kings’ ace scored his season-high 25th triple-double on Monday, setting the NBA record with his double figures. Sabonis has also joined the esteemed list of Wilt Chamberlain, Oscar Robertson, Russell Westbrook, and Nikola Jokic as the fifth-ever player to record 25 triple-doubles in a single NBA season.
Additionally, with a total of 973 rebounds so far, Sabonis has reminded the NBA community why he was crowned the NBA rebounding leader last year. No other player in the league matches his rebounding average of 13.7 during the 2023-2024 regular season.
The three-time All-Star is averaging 19.8 points and 8.3 assists per game while shooting 60.8% from the field and 40.8% from the 3-point range, keeping the Kings in the playoff hunt with the Mavs vying for the sixth spot.
