Former New England Patriots star cornerback and Super Bowl hero Malcolm Butler reportedly had a straightforward message to police before he was arrested for driving under the influence.
WBZ-TV CBS Boston received a police report detailing the arrest of the former Pro Bowler. According to the police report, Butler was arrested on Mar. 16 in North Providence, Rhode Island for driving under the influence.
Per the report, Butler was pulled over by an officer shortly after 3:00 a.m. local time. According to the report, Butler simply told the officer to “take me to jail” after being asked if he had been drinking:
“When the officer asked Butler if he had been drinking, the former Patriot allegedly replied, “just take me to jail.” Butler allegedly refused field sobriety tests and was arrested. His car was towed away. He later refused to take a breathalyzer test at the police station, the report said.”
Butler was charged for driving under the influence and is slated to appear in court this Wednesday, per WBTZ-TV CBS Boston.
The former West Alabama star announced his second retirement from football earlier this month during a public event. Malcolm Butler previously retired in the 2021 offseason, but wound up returning to the Patriots on a new contract.
Malcolm Butler ended up suffering an injury and was released before the start of the 2022 season, and he went unsigned that year. The Atlanta Falcons met with Butler before the 2023 campaign, but he was never signed by the club.
Malcolm Butler Is A Patriots Legend
The undrafted free agent joined the Patriots in 2014 and crafted quite the career that nobody could have envisioned.
Butler cemented himself as a hero in Foxborough forever when he intercepted Russell Wilson’s pass at the goal line in the waning seconds of Super Bowl 49, cementing the Patriots’ fourth Lombardi Trophy.
Continuing his rise to stardom, Butler earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2015 and a Second-team All-Pro selection in 2016. He won his second Super Bowl ring in the latter year, when the Pats pulled off a historic comeback against the Atlanta Falcons in SB 51.
His first tenure in New England ended on a sour note, having been benched in Super Bowl 52 for mysterious reasons before leaving to sign with the Tennessee Titans in free agency. That, however, doesn’t take away the fact that Butler made the greatest play in franchise history.
