Unsurprisingly, the Washington Commanders and New England Patriots reportedly plan to stay right where they are in the 2024 NFL Draft order.
The Chicago Bears are expected to use the No. 1 selection of the 2024 NFL Draft via the Carolina Panthers on USC quarterback Caleb Williams. Regardless of what the Commanders and Patriots do with their picks, the top three selections will most certainly be quarterbacks.
During his appearance on ESPN’s “SportsCenter” program, NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that the Commanders and Patriots do not appear open to the idea of trading the No. 2 and No. 3 picks in the 2024 NFL Draft, respectively:
“This year, it will be the teams’ try to come up to Washington’s spot at two and New England’s spot at three in the draft, though both teams are apprehensive to give up those picks.”
For a while, it was assumed that Washington would take North Carolina’s Drake Maye or LSU’s Jayden Daniels with the No. 2 pick. But interestingly, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported on Monday that rival team executives think the Commanders will take Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy:
Regardless, it’d be a giant surprise if Washington did not take a quarterback with the No. 2 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. They have lacked a franchise-level QB for a while now, and this year’s class is loaded with promising signal-callers.
The Patriots are also in desperate need of a new franchise quarterback. Even if they trade the No. 3 selection, one can only assume that they’ll want to remain in a spot that will let them to get a second-tier QB prospect like Oregon’s Bo Nix or Washington’s Michael Penix Jr.
The 2024 NFL Draft Is Loaded With Quarterbacks
We obviously won’t know for a few years, but the 2024 NFL Draft has the chance to be one of the best ever for the quarterback position.
Williams, Daniels (the 2023 Heisman Trophy winner) and Maye have the skill sets to be five-star quarterbacks in the modern NFL. McCarthy, Penix Jr. and Nix also have enticing talents that could also make them quality long-term starting QBs.
With so many teams in need of a new quarterback, we could see as many as six QBs go in the first round. The Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos, Las Vegas Raiders and Seattle Seahawks are other teams to follow in the QB watch during round one.
