Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has officially revealed who his starting quarterback will be in 2024.
The Steelers are suddenly a very different team, having landed two QB talents at opposite ends of the veteran ladder in Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, with Kenny Pickett having departed via trade to Philadelphia.
Wilson signed with the team in free agency after his expensive release from the Denver Broncos, while the Chicago Bears traded Fields in anticipation of drafting Caleb Williams.
The former Seattle Seahawks and Broncos signal-caller arrived in Pittsburgh under the impression that he would be the starter, yet the Fields acquisition left some questions.
Tomlin, though, has removed all doubt as he confirmed the veteran will have “pole position” in the QB room, according to ESPN’s Brooke Pryor.
“Among other things, Mike Tomlin said Russell Wilson will have the ‘pole position’ in the quarterbacks room and when it’s appropriate for Justin Fields to compete, he’ll compete,” Pryor shared on X/Twitter.
Mike Tomlin Should Have A Perfect Scenario in Mind
Wilson, who says he wants to play well into his forties, has an opportunity to reignite his career after two failed campaigns in Denver. The Steelers were able to get a massive discount with his signing as his one-year deal is only worth $1.5 million. That’s because Wilson is still owed over $80 million by the Broncos.
As for Fields, he joins the Steelers after putting some good stats down on paper while failing to find success with the Bears. The team has since decided that Williams is their best option.
There are plenty out there who feel like Chicago made a mistake by letting Fields leave, especially as they only got a compensatory sixth-round pick in exchange.
If anything, the competition in Pittsburgh will be interesting. If things go the way Tomlin wants, they’ll get a good season or more from Wilson before Fields takes over as the franchise man.
