The Dallas Cowboys have been going viral for their lack of movement during the offseason free agency period, but that is the least of their problems right now.
At the Annual League Meeting in Orlando, Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy told reporters that 2023 rookies defensive tackle Mazi Smith and tight end Luke Schoonmaker have each had offseason shoulder surgery.
Those surgeries are expected to keep them both out of OTAs and minicamp in the coming months.
Smith, the team’s 2023 first-round draft pick, underwent his surgery immediately after the season. The 4-6-month rehab should have him back in plenty of time for the start of training camp. Smith played only 28 percent of the snaps in 17 games with three starts. He totaled 13 tackles and a sack, via ESPN.com.
Schoonmaker, the 2023 second-round draft pick of the Dallas Cowboys, recently had his surgery. Schoonmaker played only 31 percent of the snaps in 17 games with no starts. He made eight catches for 65 yards and two touchdowns, via ESPN.com.
Dallas Cowboys Essentially Got Zero Production From Their 2023 Class
The Dallas Cowboys had a good year in 2023 and that was despite not getting very much from their 2023 Draft class.
While fans are still hopeful that Mazi Smith will come around with the proper coaching and finally play a permanent position, second-round pick Luke Schoonmaker did not instill much confidence.
The Dallas Cowboys tight end played in all 18 games, but what hurt him the most was missing most of the offseason program, including training camp, with a plantar fasciitis injury.
Heading into an important year two, Schoonmaker and the others will need to step it up if the Dallas Cowboys have high hopes of making a deep playoff run.
