The San Antonio Spurs worked out a possible second-round pick Blake Hinson from Pittsburgh University.

With all eyes on who the San Antonio Spurs draft with one of their two first-round picks in the 2024 NBA Draft, who (if anyone) they trade for, Victor Wembanyama’s upcoming trip to the Paris Olympics to represent team France, and free agency, what they do with their two second-round picks (35th and 48th) has slipped through the cracks.

The Spurs have found talent in the second round before, ranging from Tre Jones to Manu Ginobili, so writing off the later picks has proven to be a fruitless endeavor. As the Spurs prepare for a full draft this summer, they are reported to have worked out Pittsburgh standout Blake Hinson.

Hinson, 24, was in college for six years but was redshirted for two of them. He played two seasons with Ole Miss, sat out for two seasons with Iowa State, and played two seasons with the Pittsburgh Panthers.

In his final season, he averaged 18.5 points and 4.4 rebounds. At 6-7, 235 pounds, he has the frame for an NBA wing and managed to convert a whopping 42.1 percent of his three-pointers on his way to his second straight All-ACC Team nod.

Make no mistake, he is an NBA-ready shooter and scorer. He can create for himself off the dribble or post up in the corner and wait for a pass. However, he is not a great rebounder, not a good playmaker, and offers little in the way of getting to the rim.

He is a solid athlete with an NBA body, but his defense has been called into question. If he can improve the secondary parts of his game, he will be a second-round steal, but at 24 years old, there is not much optimism that he will be little more than a one-trick pony. If he can prove those doubts wrong, expect him to have a productive NBA career.

In the second round, selecting Hinson is a low-risk pick, so the Spurs are doing their due diligence by working him out. Hinson also visited with the Boston Celtics, Charlotte Hornets, and Memphis Grizzlies.
