Spurs break their own attendance record for largest sporting event at Moody Center

AUSTIN, Texas — An attendance record fell Friday night at Austin’s Moody Center.

The San Antonio Spurs led by rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama broke the record for a sporting event in Moody Center history with 16,223 people in attendance.

The previous record was also held by the Spurs. The organization set the record in 2023 as they faced the Portland Trail Blazers in the inaugural I-35 Series.

“It’s fun to get out,” Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich said ahead of the series. “I know that sounds simplistic, but it’s true. Austin’s a great town … Getting out and being able to … Enjoy the area for a couple days is a good break for all of us.”

The series is part of the organization’s vision to engage a larger portion of its fanbase outside of the Alamo City.

In 2023, the team played two games in Austin and one in Mexico City as they celebrated their 50th anniversary. It also played a game inside San Antonio’s Alamodome last season, which set the NBA single-game attendance record with 68,323 fans.

The Silver and Black have another shot at breaking Friday night’s record as they take on the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Moody Center.
