Topps announced that Wembanyama’s Rookie of the Year card broke a sales record.

Victor Wembanyama continues to break records, even when he isn’t on the court. He finished his first season as the Rookie of the Year, runner-up for Defensive Player of the Year, sold the fourth-most jerseys in the NBA as a rookie, and was the third-most viewed player across social media this season.

Setting NBA records isn’t enough, apparently. Now he’s taken a sales record from Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Topps, the sports card company, announced that their run of the Topps Now series for Wembanyama’s ROTY award was printed and sold 113,777 times. The previous record holder, Ohtani, had circulated 107,541 copies.

Both Ohtani and Wembanyama are generational two-way talents who are widely considered the most unique, exciting, and promising players in their respective sports. Both have international draws as well. Wembanyama is perhaps the most well-known non-soccer-playing French athlete, and Ohtani is Japan’s greatest athlete since Ichiro Suzuki, although he might take that crown soon.

As Ohtani and Wembanyama take American sports by storm, their impact on the game both on and off the field/court is hard to grasp. Ohtani signed a record-breaking 10-year, $700 million contract this past offseason, and Wembanyama’s next contract will likely set an NBA record.

The San Antonio Spurs have plenty of money to spend, but expect them to save a large portion of that money to extend young stars Jeremy Sochan and Wembanyama when the time comes. Devin Vassell has already been extended and is under team control until 2029.
