There has been a dramatic shift in the betting odds regarding who the Washington Commanders will select with the No. 2 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

For a while, North Carolina’s Drake Maye was the heavy front-runner to go second overall to the Washington Commanders. LSU’s Jayden Daniels has since emerged as the odds-on favorite, but there’s another name to follow on the second overall pick watch.

Though Daniels remains the -135 favorite to go second overall behind Caleb Williams (to the Chicago Bears) at the DraftKings sportsbook, Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy has seen his odds jump up to +500. Maye still carries the second-best odds at +200.

This is also noteworthy because as noted by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, McCarthy’s odds to go second overall to Washington were recently set at +2500. But following his stellar Pro Day outing on Friday, McCarthy suddenly finds his name in the conversation to be the second overall pick.

On Monday, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero stated that executives of rival NFL teams believe that Washington will end up using the No. 2 pick on McCarthy.

The Washington Commanders Are Getting A Special QB

Regardless of what the Washington Commanders do with the No. 2 selection, the bottom line is that they’re set to land a highly-touted and ultra-talented signal-caller that could single-handedly change the direction of the franchise.

Washington has been held back by mediocre quarterback play since Kirk Cousins left for the Minnesota Vikings in 2018. But with Maye, Daniels and McCarthy all available at No. 2, the Commanders are set to finally bring in a potential franchise-changing QB.

The Commanders enter year two in the Josh Harris ownership era, with a new GM-head coach regime in Adam Peters and Dan Quinn. With a new quarterback on the horizon, things are getting awfully exciting again for a once-proud Washington NFL franchise that hasn’t had much to celebrate over the last 30 years.
