Britney Spears just finished an unsuccessful lawsuit against her father Jamie Spears, which resulted in the pop star havng to pay her dad’s legal bills despite accusing him of financial mismanagement during his time as her conservator.
But according to new reports, the singer is going after another huge company for harming her reputation– Netflix.
Three years on, the Toxic singer has chosen to take a firm stance by refusing Netflix any permission to use her music, image, or cooperation, as reported by In Touch Weekly.
Britney Believes Netflix Is Exploiting Her
According to an insider, Britney and her team view themselves as the “good guys” and consider the documentary to have been “shabby and exploitative.” This move reflects Britney’s ongoing efforts to control her narrative and push back against media portrayals she finds unfair.
“Britney and her team have taken the position that Netflix did something unforgivable to her by airing and continuing to make available their documentary piece on Britney and her situation,” the source explained.
Apparently, Britney is afraid the poorly received documentary “might be one of the most watched pieces of Britney-related media of the last twenty years,” resulting in the singer’s hesitation o allow the streaming giant to use her image in future content.
“That’s not really fair to Britney on a bunch of levels and she knows it,” the insider added. “To her credit, she’s putting her money where her mouth is and just refusing to do business with Netflix on any level.”
The 2021 documentary Britney vs Spears delved into the tumultuous life of pop icon focusing on her lengthy conservatorship battle and complex family dynamics. Directed by Erin Lee Carr, the film aimed to shed light on the legal and personal struggles that Spears faced over the years.
Notably, Spears did not participate in the documentary, nor did she approve or contribute to its production. The documentary featured interviews with legal experts, journalists, and individuals close to the situation, including Spears’ former manager Sam Lutfi and her ex-boyfriend Adnan Ghalib.
Why Netflix’s Britney Doc Was Controversial
The documentary was controversial for several reasons. Critics argued that it was exploitative and sensationalized Spears’ personal issues for entertainment value. Additionally, some felt it rehashed painful aspects of her life without her consent, potentially undermining her efforts to reclaim her autonomy.
Supporters of Spears, including her fans and legal team, saw the film as a shabby portrayal that failed to adequately respect her privacy and agency. And given recent reports, it seems Britney also agrees the Netflix special didn’t do a good job of portraying her positively.
Needless to say, it doesn’t seem likely that Britney will collaborate with Netflix in the future.
