Earlier this week, news broke that former NFL star wide receiver Antonio Brown is filing for bankruptcy amid a series of legal troubles.
The news was broken by CTESPN Network, the media brand that Antonio Brown founded. In the announcement, it was added that the controversial former wide receiver plans to release new music during the summer.
Patrick Tine of the Times Union provided more details on Brown’s bankruptcy filing via court documents. The filing states that the 35-year-old is unable to afford payments for multiple civil cases,
“According to documents filed Monday in federal bankruptcy court in Florida, Brown owes nearly $3 million to at least eight creditors. They include a Florida truck driver who was reportedly assaulted by Brown and was awarded $1.2 million after Brown failed to appear in court for a lawsuit the truck driver filed against him. According to the documents, Brown also cannot pay at least three six-figure civil judgments.”
Brown filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which allows businesses and individuals to reorganize their finances while being protected from creditors. The filing does not appear to show any possible creditors in the Capital Region, debts to the Arena Football League or former players for the Empire who were not paid or had game checks removed from their bank accounts during Brown’s tempestuous ownership.”
According to the court filings, Brown “owes hundreds of thousands of dollars in credit card debt and $296 to a South Florida plumber.” Brown is also being sued by Avanti Solutions, as he allegedly owes them $28,589 for work they did at a concert.
Per Tine, Antonio Brown also listed a luxurious 18,000-square-foot mansion in his court bankruptcy filing. The home is located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Brown was on a Hall of Fame trajectory long before his off-the-field troubles began. He was a seven-time Pro Bowler and a four-time First-team All-Pro who twice led the NFL in catches and receiving yards.
The Central Michigan product won a Super Bowl 55 ring with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2020 season, after Tom Brady pushed the team to give him a second chance. Brown was cut by the Bucs late in the 2021 season following a disagreement with the coaching staff about his injury status.
Antonio Brown Has A Troubling History Of Legal Issues
Brown has a sad and disturbing history of legal issues dating back to 2019.
He was released by the New England Patriots after one game in 2019 after he was accused of sexual assault by his former trainer and sexual misconduct by a second woman. Brown and his former trainer later reached a settlement.
In Oct. 2022, Brown was ordered to pay $1.2 million to a truck driver that he assaulted outside of his home in 2020. Three separate arrest warrants were issued against Brown for failing to make child support payments over a six-month period from April to October of last year.
With all of his legal issues, it’s hard to envision Brown getting to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, regardless of what he accomplished on the field.
