Anthony Davis’ injury in the Lakers’ game against the Warriors on Saturday was a sight for sore eyes. Literally.

Davis was forced to leave Los Angeles’ contest with Golden State in the first quarter after getting poked in the eye.

The superstar forward has been on a tear lately, averaging 23.9 points, 13.7 rebounds, 2.3 blocks, 2.6 assists and 1.5 steals per game since the All-Star break. He had one of his most dominant games of the season this past week, posting 27 points, 25 rebounds, seven steals, five assists and three blocks in a win over the Timberwolves.

Davis’ freak accident comes at an inopportune time as the Lakers look to get out of the Play-In range and into the top six in the Western Conference.

What is Anthony Davis’ injury?
Davis got poked in the eye by Warriors forward Trayce Jackson-Davis as he drove to the rim and attempted to finish a tightly contested layup.

Jackson-Davis appeared to elbow Davis’ head on the way up and his finger poked Davis’ eye on the follow-through.

Davis’ eye swelled up immediately and he eventually went back to the Lakers’ locker room.

He was diagnosed with a “corneal abrasion,” which is defined as “a trauma or tear to the delicate tissue on the outermost layer of the eye,” according to yalemedicine.org.

How long will Anthony Davis be out?
Davis was ruled out for the remainder of the Lakers’ game against the Warriors on Saturday.

His “vision was impaired and his eye was swollen shut after the contact,” ESPN’s Dave McMenamin reported after the game. He added that Davis will be monitored closely on Sunday to determine his availability for Monday’s game against Atlanta.

Los Angeles desperately needs its defensive anchor as it tries to make up a 3.5-game difference for a top-six seed in the West with only 14 games remaining.

Davis has only missed four games this season. The Lakers are 1-3 in those contests.

Luckily for Davis, the Lakers’ upcoming schedule isn’t very crowded this week. After they play the Hawks on Monday, they will have three days off before they host the 76ers on Friday.
