The NBA’s best players tend to have a killer instinct that allows them to go on absurd scoring runs on their own. Dallas Mavericks star Luka Dončić has seemingly developed his own killer instinct, and one of his former teammates experienced it firsthand in practice.

Speaking on 105.3 The Fan, Mavericks assistant general manager Michael Finley told a story about a time when Grant Williams, who was traded to the Charlotte Hornets at the trade deadline, decided to challenge Dončić after he felt the star wasn’t putting forth his best effort in practice.

“One day in practice, a player or teammate, I won’t call his name out, but it was Grant Williams,” Finley said. “He decided he wanted to get under Luka’s skin. He felt that Luka didn’t come that day ready to practice. To make a long story short, they had a scrimmage going, he’s talking trash to Luka up and down the court. So finally, Luka says, ‘Okay.’ And I tell you, Luka went on a 26-6 run by himself.”

There’s no denying Dončić’s scoring ability—he’s averaging 34.3 points per game this season—but having a killer instinct could be exactly what he needs to help get the Mavericks to the next level.

Dallas currently sits in eighth place in the Western Conference at 38-28, and Dončić will be looking to continue his MVP-caliber season to ensure his team reaches the playoffs. If the star can have moments like he had in that particular practice this postseason, the Mavericks could be in for a big playoff run.
