Kirk Cousins will be wearing a new jersey number as a member of the Atlanta Falcons, and the news has led to fans making the same joke on social media.

On Monday, the Falcons announced on X/Twitter that Cousins will be switching to the jersey No. 18. The No. 8 that Cousins wore in both Minnesota and Washington is occupied by tight end Kyle Pitts.

Cousins wore the No. 12 in each of his first two seasons with Washington before switching over to No. 8 in the 2014 season. He would wear that number over each of his final four years with the NFC East club, as well as for the entirety of his six years with the Vikings.

With Cousins making the switch to No. 18, football fans were making a hilarious joke about how it won’t bode well for Pitts:

If Kirk Cousins had been a career-long No. 8, maybe Pitts would have felt more inclined to give up the digit to his new teammate. For Tampa Bay Buccaneers superstar wideout Chris Godwin, giving up the No. 12 to Tom Brady following the NFL legend’s arrival in 2020 was a no-brainer. Godwin then made the switch to No. 14 that he continues to don following Brady’s retirement.

Kirk Cousins’ Arrival Should Greatly Benefit Kyle Pitts
Jokes aside, Cousins’ arrival should do wonders for Pitts, whose production has taken a slip over the last two years due largely to uneven quarterback play in Atlanta.

The No. 4 pick of 2021 caught 68 passes for 1,026 yards and a touchdown in his rookie year. After being limited to 10 games in 2022, Pitts stayed healthy in 2023 but only finished with a stat line of 53-667-3.

Well, Cousins is a massive upgrade at QB over Marcus Mariota, Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke. The four-time Pro Bowler will sling it around Atlanta’s high-powered offense, and a healthy Cousins should help Pitts regain his superstar form here in 2024.
