Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni has revealed the truth behind his heated debate with team-mate Jude Bellingham that went viral on social media recently.

A video emerged online earlier this month of the Madrid pair discussing the qualities of two players, with Bellingham declaring ‘he’s better than your boy’, before Tchouameni laughed off his claim by responding ‘nah brother, please, please, please, please!’

Some fans jumped to the conclusion that they may have been trying to settle the debate over whether Kylian Mbappe or Erling Haaland is the best player in the world right now.

Bellingham and Haaland played together at Borussia Dortmund for two years between 2020 and 2022, while Tchouameni and Mbappe are international team-mates with France.

However, Tchouameni has insisted this is not the case, and has revealed the two players they were really talking about.

‘We weren’t talking about Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland. We were talking about Eric Dier and Dayot Upamecano,’ Tchouameni told RMC Sport.

‘Jude was talking about Dier and I was talking about Dayot. It will sell less but it’s the truth.’

There was some speculation that he could return to the England fold this month ahead of this summer’s Euros, and Bellingham appears to feel he may have had a case, but Gareth Southgate opted to resist the temptation to recall Dier.

Tchouameni was sticking up for his fellow Frenchman by backing Upamecano, and he has admitted that he also does rate Mbappe above Haaland in football’s latest big debate, with the attacking pair looking set to dominate in the post-Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi era.

‘I prefer Mbappe. Haaland is a great player, but I prefer Mbappe,’ he added.

Tchouameni insists he is yet to speak to Mbappe about his immediate future, with the PSG forward due to make some big decisions on his club and country commitments in the coming months.

‘I can’t say whether he’s talking more about Real Madrid or the Olympics, because I haven’t talked to him about that yet,’ Tchouameni said.
