“On what grounds are you getting DIVORCED? He watched Titanic SIX TIMES” she said-Lucy Beaumont revealed ‘REAL REASON’ she’d divorce Jon Richardson-HO

The couple collaborated on a few projects, but living and working with a spouse is not always the best recipe for happiness

THE world of showbiz has been left shaken by the news that comedians Jon Richardson, 41, and Lucy Beaumont, 40 are getting divorced, after nine years of marriage.

In a joint statement earlier today, the Celebrity Gogglebox stars announced that they had ‘jointly and amicably made the difficult decision to divorce and go our separate ways.’

It appears that the signs of their separation were evident even back in 2022, as revealed in a Gogglebox episode. During the show, Jon, known for his dry wit, confessed to Lucy that he had watched the 1997 film Titanic, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, six times. However, Lucy was less than impressed by Jon’s cinematic preferences, jokingly alluding to consulting a family lawyer.

She says: “On what grounds are you getting divorced? He watched Titanic six times.”

The Yorkshire comedy couple was popular for their humorous sniping, which made them appear relatable. But clearly, deep-seated issues were simmering beneath the jokes.

In a recent interview, Beaumont, a stand-up comic hailing from Hull, emphasized that the bickering seen on-screen is purely for the cameras.

She said:  “It’s been great, but I see comments on social media, and people don’t seem to realise it’s not real,” she told the Sunday Post.

“I don’t henpeck – we wouldn’t have lasted this long if I was as mean to him in real life.”

On the show’s concept, she remarked, “You don’t want to see a smug couple in love, in a nice house, with a stable career and a lovely little child. Who wants to see that?”

The couple, who have a daughter, have also starred together in the mockumentary “Meet the Richardsons” since 2020, portraying “exaggerated versions of themselves.”

Beaumont received a BAFTA TV award nomination in 2023 for Best Female Performance in a Comedy Programme for her role in “Meet the Richardsons.”

Meanwhile, Jon, also a stand-up performer, is renowned for being the team captain on “8 out of 10 Cats.”

The Lancaster-born comedian had his own show: Jon Richardson: Ultimate worrier which ran on Dave for two series.

Just over a year ago, Lucy, at 40 years old, openly confessed during an interview to experiencing feelings of jealousy, describing herself as a “jealous wife.” She hinted that her own career might have been eclipsed by her husband’s success.

In an interview with The Guardian, Lucy recalled: “I very much still feel like the jealous wife who’s hungry for a career.”

Her comments came after the couple were recognised in public thanks to their fame where one passer-by said to Lucy: “Isn’t it nice that your husband’s let you be on telly with him?”

She then acknowledged that this sentiment influenced her real-life experiences as she found herself comparing her career trajectory with that of Jon’s.

Lucy and Jon, both 40 years old, have appeared together on screen in numerous shows, including their mockumentary series, “Meet The Richardsons.” Interestingly, the idea for this series emerged after a TV producer noticed them bickering on another show called “Married To A Celebrity.”

“Meet The Richardsons” features Lucy and Jon portraying exaggerated and fictionalized versions of themselves and their home life. However, Lucy, who is the writer of the program, has admitted that while it may appear scripted, “some things are” real..

As the writer of the show, Jon said in the past that Lucy wrote his role in the programme for him “to be humiliated and look embarrassed”.

Before announcing their split, Jon acknowledged that they leveraged their marital conflicts for their show’s benefit. They frequently structured scenes in “Meet The Richardsons” to reflect their genuine disagreements.

He added to The Guardian: “Every couple argues but we have an end product for our arguments.

“We hone them then put them on TV. And then it’s like: ‘Oh, perhaps we weren’t arguing – perhaps we were just working on a routine.’”

The pair, who share one daughter together, confirmed their split today having tied the knot in April 2015.

A statement shared by PA news agency today said: “After 9 years of marriage, we would like to announce that we have separated. We have jointly and amicably made the difficult decision to divorce and go our separate ways.

“As our only priority is managing this difficult transition for our daughter, we would ask that our privacy is respected at this sensitive time to protect her well-being.

“We will be making no further comment.”

Comedian Jon, aged 41, and Lucy, aged 40, began their relationship in 2013, introduced by mutual friend Roisin Conaty. Their daughter, Elsie Louise, was born in 2016. Throughout their time together, the couple appeared in various television programs.
