Of all the outrageous things that go down in Bill Murray’s Netflix Christmas Carol TV special – George Clooney mixing Martinis, the French band Phoenix cooking up a storm in the kitchen of The Carlyle hotel – this one takes the cake.

Miley Cyrus belting out a sombre, heartfelt rendition of Silent Night. And not a tongue, bare breast or outré outfit to be seen.

The singer is just one of the many stars who appear in the Sofia Coppola-directed hourlong sketch show, which premiered on Netflix on the weekend.

Cyrus originally signed up to appear in a hip-shaking, toe-tapping scene which saw her sing along to carol classic ‘Sleigh Ride’ with Murray himself.

But, when rapper Rick Ross – who had been tapped by Murray and Coppola to perform Silent Night – failed to show, the director turned to Cyrus and asked if she would be up for the job.

Cyrus was keen, and promptly googled the lyrics on her phone (she didn’t know the tune off by heart).

“[Miley] was a good sport,” Coppola said in an interview

“I was really impressed… And to hear her voice – I hadn’t heard her sing live without the whole thing behind her, so it was great.”

You have to see it to believe it.
