The Dallas Cowboys have yet to make any blockbuster trades or splashy free agent signings this offseason, but there’s plenty of time for owner Jerry Jones to change that between now and Week 1.
2024 is a pivotal year for the Dallas Cowboys franchise. Quarterback Dak Prescott, head coach Mike McCarthy and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb are entering the final year of their respective contracts. Star pass-rusher Micah Parsons is eligible for a contract extension, too.
Dallas lost its top running back of 2023, two-time 1,000-yard rusher Tony Pollard, to the Tennessee Titans in free agency. Bringing back old friend Ezekiel Elliott on a one-year deal bolsters the running back depth chart, but he’s no longer an RB1 at this stage of his career.
Jess Hayne of SB Nation’s Blogging The Boys website proposed the idea of Dallas trading for Carolina Panthers RB Miles Sanders, who’s entering year two of a four-year deal he signed last year:
“Having observed Miles Sanders’ work for four years with the Eagles, and again in last year’s victory over the Panthers, who knows if the Cowboys are even interested. But if Dallas does want to add at least one more consequential running back to their 2024 mix, Sanders may be one of their best remaining opportunities. Ironically, his availability may come from Jonathan Brooks, who many wished the Cowboys would’ve added last week. But perhaps in a trickle-down way, Brooks will still help improve Dallas’ RB room this season.”
Sanders was named to the Pro Bowl in 2022, his final season with the Philadelphia Eagles, after rushing for 1,269 yards and 11 touchdowns. In 2023 free agency, he signed a four-year with Carolina worth $25.4 million.
The Penn State product was largely ineffective last season, however. He rushed for just 432 yards and one touchdown, eventually losing his starting job to Chuba Hubbard.
Playing in the same division as Philly, the Dallas Cowboys have had plenty of opportunities to watch Sanders take over games in the backfield. So if the price is right, it’s a move Dallas should definitely consider.
Miles Sanders Makes Sense For The Dallas Cowboys
With the Dallas Cowboys in win-now mode, acquiring a former 1,000-yard rusher who shouldn’t cost much on the trade market makes perfect sense.
Dallas always relies on a productive ground game to get by, and Sanders would have no problem producing with one of the league’s best offensive lines blocking for him. Add it all up, and Sanders is a logical trade target for the Cowboys.
