Klay Thompson wants to re-sign with the Golden State Warriors but on one condition.
Klay Thompson was a guest on ‘The Draymond Green Show recently, where he talked about his future with the Golden State Warriors after the expiration of his contract during the summer. He also revealed what he would prioritize when deciding on his future.
Furthermore, he revealed to Draymond Green that he had let his contract situations and playing time affect him, but after having a deep conversation with head coach Steve Kerr, he could break out of his shell. And basically, he just wanted to have fun again.
I just can't believe it's here -- When you're in your mid-20s, it's so crazy, you think you're going to play forever. I was actually struggling a lot with that at the beginning of this year because of the unknown. In saying that, when it comes to free agency in July, I just got to keep that in mind. Yes, I want to re-sign with the [Warriors], but I also have to prioritize my mental health and lay out what is important to me at this point in my career.Klay Thompson said
As one half of the Splash Brothers, he and the Dubs couldn’t agree on an extension; thus, his future is now in the air, and his current contract ends this July. And as there’s no requirement to re-sign, he definitely wouldn’t lack suitors.
Furthermore, this season has been challenging for the four-time NBA champion, averaging 17.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists. Playing from the bench most of the time and proving his worth when called upon.
Klay Thompson not expecting a massive contract in NBA free agency
Thompson has always wanted a new contract agreement with the Golden State Warriors, but his mindset is not set on receiving a massive deal. This is according to ESPN’s Kendra Andrews, who made this known while speaking on the ‘Hoop Collective.’
From my understanding, at least when it comes to Klay's contract, the conversations that I've had, he isn't under this impression that he is going to get this massive contract. Steve is on for two more years, matching up with Steph's contract with two more years. Klay would be content matching up with those guys.Kendra Andrews said
However, earlier, Shams Charania of The Athletic had reported that Thompson was offered a two-year, $48 million extension last summer, which he duly declined.
Thompson’s career has been marred by injuries and inconsistencies recently; however, he was open to being a role player, which has seen him come off the bench for 14 games this season. This was the first time he came off the bench since his rookie season, and despite not taking the sixth-man role well, he has been able to live with it.
