Katy Perry has a huge fan base in Australia, and she showed her gratitude last night when she flew into Sydney for the ‘pink carpet’ premiere of her new documentary.

Dressed in a gold Versace dress and silver Christian Louboutin heels, the popstar mingled with hundreds of fans at Event Cinemas in George Street, signing autographs and posing for snapshots.

The Katy Perry: Part of Me documentary is an intimate look the 27-year-old during her most recent tour, and has been eagerly awaited by fans around the world.

After performing some of her songs for the Hollywood red carpet premiere of the film, Katy hopped straight on the 14-hour flight to Australia, arriving at Sydney airport yesterday in a grungy leather bomber jacket.

But the I Kissed A Girl singer got quickly into her glamorous designer wardrobe for the Down Under premiere of her film, which charts the highs and lows of her rise to success and includes heartbreaking scenes of her break-up with former husband Russel Brand.

At the Sydney premiere, her fans showed their support by breaking into renditions of hit songs like Firework and Last Friday Night.

Out of the blue: While Katy has been known to wear all manner of hair styles in crazy colours, last night she opted for a more classic look

Some young fans at the event wore blue wigs and cat ears, accessories the star has been seen wearing herself.

But last night the singer wore her dark tresses in loose waves down her back, in classic Hollywood film star style.

In addition to her younger fans, Perry was also greeted by a pair of Sydney drag queens, who posed with the pop star in outrageous dresses, hair and jewellery which were more garish imitations of Katy’s outfit.

Sydney is a famously gay-friendly city, and host to the annual Gay Mardi Gras parade in early March, which attracts thousands of tourists from all around the world.

Like Kylie Minogue before her, Katy has a huge following in the gay community in Australia and worldwide – quite a feat for a good Christian girl who is the child of two pastors.

On the pink carpet, the singer told reporters that while the movie covers a rollercoaster year or so, she hopes it’s not the biggest time in her life.

‘I hope I haven’t peaked yet at 27. That would be a crying shame,’ she said.

As for the movie, Perry says there was one main thing she wanted to achieve.

‘I just wanted to inspire people to live out their dreams and not have to change themselves in order to live out their dreams. They can just be themselves.’

After the event wrapped up, Katy tweeted: ‘Welp! That was heaps of fun! Thanks for letting me come down under. Love U Aussies!’

She asked fans to ‘show your love July 2nd’, when the film will open in cinemas.
