She has owned 2013 so it’s only fitting Miley Cyrus closed out the year by performing at Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest in New York before the ball drop.

While she has made headlines for her barely there outfits and provocative stage performances this year, the star was relatively conservatively dressed in sparkly gold trousers, a matching crop top and a huge white fur coat with a long train.

Miley admitted the freezing New York temperatures had played a part in her choice of attire as well as getting rapped over the knuckles for previous provocative looks, explaining: ‘This is the most clothes I’ve been in in 2013. Because of the cold weather and standards and practises, this is what we came up with.’

However, Miley admitted she was nervous, telling Ryan: ‘I’m a little nervous tonight, I can’t believe a billion people are going to watch this, this is a big moment for me.’

And she opened up about her favourite moment from a tumultuous year which saw her engagement end and her album storm the charts as she shed her Disney image once and for all.

She said: ‘The biggest moment for me was the VMAs, it was the beginning of a chapter for me.

She performed Get It Right and Wrecking Ball in Times Square and despite briefly sticking out her tongue to lick Ryan she otherwise kept it in her mouth and didn’t attempt to twerk.

Miley previously explained she only sticks her tongue out when she gets embarrassed.

She told Barbara Walters in an interview for ABC special, Barbara Walters Presents: The 20 Most Fascinating People of 2013, ‘I get embarrassed to take pictures. That’s actually the truth.

‘I’m so embarrassed because people are taking pictures of me, and I just don ‘t know how to – I don’t know how to smile and just be awkward, so I stick my tongue out because I don’t know what else to do.’

However, Miley’s conservative performance surprised a number of people with many taking to Twitter to voice their surprise that she didn’t ride the famous Times Square ball like the ‘wrecking ball’ in her video of the same name.

Of course, the show just was not about Miley, with a host of performers taking to the stage.

Joining Miley was this year’s runaway stars, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, who performed their hit Thrift Shop and Can’t Hold Us.

Starting off in a unusual poncho look, enigmatic frontman Macklemore had the audience singing along to Thrift Shop before stripping off the red knit to reveal a cooler leather jacket look.
