Some interesting new details have emerged on the Dallas Cowboys’ plans with quarterback Dak Prescott as trade rumors continue to ramp up.
Earlier this week, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the Cowboys do not plan to extend Dak Prescott, who’s entering the final season of his contract. In 2021, Prescott signed a four-year extension worth $160 million after playing 2020 under the franchise tag.
Speculation has grown that the Cowboys are planning a future without Prescott, and that America’s Team could even trade the soon-to-be 31-year-old. But while speaking on “NFL Live”, ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler reported that the Cowboys’ wish is to keep Prescott around:
“The notion that the Cowboys don’t want to re-sign Dak Prescott after this year is false. They are going to try, now can they find common ground…? They still see Prescott as their long-term answer.”
Fowler added that Dallas wishes to extend the “big three” of Prescott, star wideout CeeDee Lamb and do-it-all linebacker Micah Parsons.
It’s been a largely disappointing offseason thus far for the Cowboys. Owner Jerry Jones stated that the team would be going “all in” this offseason, but the reigning NFC East champions have yet to make a big splash via trade or free agency.
The Cowboys have already lost star running back Tony Pollard, Pro Bowl offensive tackle Tyron Smith, guard Tyler Biadasz and edge rushers Dorance Armstrong and Dante Fowler Jr. in free agency.
While the Cowboys have been quiet this offseason, they’ve watched their main competitors in the NFC make significant moves to get better. At this point, Jones may have to extend all of Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons to salvage what has been an underwhelming offseason.
Dak Prescott Will Get The Bag On His Next Contract
Whether it comes from the Cowboys or somebody else, Dak Prescott stands to eventually land a massive deal of over $200 million.
Kirk Cousins received $180 million from the Atlanta Falcons in free agency, and he’s five years older than Prescott and coming off a season-ending Achilles tear. Without a doubt, Prescott is going to easily surpass the value of Cousins’ deal.
The only question, of course, is if that deal will come from Mr. Jones himself.
