The Ringer released their 25 best players under 25 years old, and Victor Wembanyama cracked the list as number one.

The future of the NBA is in good hands. Luka Doncic is one of the best players in the league already, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is an MVP candidate, and Anthony Edwards plays with more swagger than anyone in the league.

But, looming over all of them, is the 7-4 phenom Victor Wembanyama and his San Antonio Spurs.

In The Ringer’s ‘The Best of the NBA’s Next Generation Rankings,’ better known as ‘The 25 Under 25,’ Victor Wembanyama took the crown. He ended his first season as perhaps the greatest rookie in NBA history, and given the criteria outlined, he is a no-brainer to be the best player on the list.

The Ringer judged their list based on current talent, potential, marketability, intangibles, and ability to build around. While you’d be hard-pressed to find even the most diehard fan who would say that Wembanyama is already better than Shai or Luka, his limitless potential, international appeal (yes, Luka is from Slovenia and Shai is Canadian, I know), and winning attitude are hard to argue against.

If the list was purely based on talent right now, Wembanyama would likely slot in at number four. Fortunately, there are all the other factors to consider, and Wemby leaves everyone else in the dust.

Interestingly, Jeremy Sochan and Devin Vassell did not make the list. They fell short of players like Jabari Smith Jr., Darius Garland, and Desmond Bane. While the Spurs have young talent to build around, the national narrative pushes that only one of them can be considered “elite.”
