TJ Friedl’s return from injury is cut short after being hit by a pitch during the Reds-Giants game.
The Cincinnati Reds haven’t played all that well to begin the season and it sounds like the franchise might be receiving some bad news regarding TJ Friedl. The veteran outfielder was just activated off the injured list and there’s a possibility he just got hurt again.
TJ Friedl was hit by a pitcher early on in the Reds’ game against the San Francisco Giants. He was taken out of the game and the most recent update reveals that Friedl may have injured his thumb, according to Bally Sports Cincinnati.

The Reds’ outfielder was recently on the injured list and was activated on May 5. Now, seven days later TJ Friedl could be dealing with another injury that forces him to lose time. Cincinnati will monitor Friedl closely in the coming days and determine what’s best for the veteran outfielder.
Friedl hasn’t played well so far this season but he hasn’t really played enough to pick up any momentum. So far this season, the Reds’ outfielder has only recorded a .182 batting average and two RBIs. So, hopefully, the injury isn’t serious and TJ Friedl can return sooner, rather than later. If not, then Cincinnati could be without Friedl once again. Just bad luck overall.
The good news is the National League Central is in a close race. So, as long as the Reds can remain within reach they could be in a solid position as the season progresses. But hopefully, TJ Friedl can play much more throughout the summer, as Cincinnati needs him in the lineup.
Reds’ 2024 playoff chances

Although the Reds aren’t deemed a legitimate contender this season they’re still in the mix for a playoff spot. They’re only 6.5 games behind the first-place Milwaukee Brewers and there’s plenty of time in the regular season for Cincinnati to improve. If they get hot at the right time this team could be a real threat late in the summer.
With that said, the Reds are certainly benefiting from playing in the NL Central. They’d be a bottom-two team in every other division except the AL West. But no matter how you look at it, Cincinnati is a bit of a long shot to make a serious playoff run. However, you can never say never in baseball. Especially when you have someone like Elly De La Cruz on the roster who is one of the best young shortstops in the world.
Look for the Reds to stay in reach of the NL Central as the season progresses. Especially if TJ Friedl can stay healthy and actually contribute. If not, then Cincinnati might have to get creative at the trade deadline.
