Nick Wright has football fans buzzing after suggesting a fascinating scenario involving Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott next year.
In a surprise, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport announced earlier this week that the Cowboys do not plan to extend Prescott, who’ entering the final season of his contract. Rapoport noted that this decision on Dallas’ end seemingly “clears the path for” the 30-year-old to enter free agency next year.
Naturally, some fans are now wondering if the Cowboys are planning to move on from Prescott between now and free agency next year. Dallas owner Jerry Jones almost never lets his top stars enter a season in a contract year, after all.
On FS1’s “First Things First” program, Wright proposed the idea of the New England Patriots passing on a QB with the No. 3 pick in next month’s NFL Draft. The reason? Wright suggested the idea of New England signing Prescott in 2024 free agency.
Wright outlined a scenario in which the Patriots trade the No. 3 pick to the Minnesota Vikings for the No. 11 and No. 23 selections, as the NFC North club may be keen on North Carolina QB Drake Maye if he’s available.
“Draft a tackle there (with the No. 11 selection)…draft one of the many stud wide receivers in this class at 23. And have the plan be, ‘We’re gonna sign Dak Prescott’….We could do the rare frontloaded deal.”
It’s certainly a fascinating suggestion on Wright’s end, but it’s also unlikely that the Patriots would plan such a move. No NFL team that desperately needs a quarterback would simply cross its fingers and hope for a Pro Bowl signal caller like Dak Prescott to hit free agency in a year.
That said, the Patriots remain a strong candidate to trade down in the draft. If they aren’t excited about any of the remaining available QBs at No. 3, de facto GM Eliot Wolf should be willing to deal that selection for additional draft picks.
Dak Prescott Had A Career Year In 2023
Prescott had the best season of his eight-year career in 2023, throwing for 4,516 yards and 36 touchdowns against nine interceptions. He finished second in MVP voting, behind only Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.
Though Prescott’s 2-5 postseason record leaves a lot to be desired, the fact is that there will always be a giant market for a top-10 level quarterback. Whether the money comes from Dallas or somewhere else, Prescott is going to be paid handsomely in 2025.
